LETMGROW
4 to 5 months ago I bought a diesel powered pickup, as diesel was selling here at $99.9/litre, $0.05 less per litre than gasoline prices and mpg ratings for diesel were considerably more than it's gasoline counterparts. 4 months later, and diesel is now at $1.25/litre (a 25% hike at the pumps in 1/3 of a year) and gasoline is $1.20/litre (gas is now $0.05 less than diesel). Gasoline has risen 12.5% in the same period that diesel has hiked 25%. I was always led to believe that diesel was a less refined fuel than gasoline, so I expected that it cost less to produce. Just think at how hard hit the trucking industry is getting nailed with these kind of price inceases for diesel fuel. $1.25/L = $5.69 cdn/Imp gal = $5.00 US/US gal (@ 1.055 exchange rate) TBow There was a point in time where diesel was lesser refined fuel than gasoline. Not so true today. The greenies have seized upon the emission standards of diesel and big trucks. The new diesel is super refined. Just look at the new catalyst systems on the new over the road trucks. At predetermined intervals programmed into the computers the truck must be pulled over and it automaticly goes through a "burn off " to clean the converter. New York state is requiring any independant contractor on a state job site have his [ or her ] truck fitted with new emission devices regardless of vehicle age. I have a friend who has a fleet of trucks which are 10 to 20 years old which will have to be retrofitted with new emission equipment at a cost of $ 20,000 per truck. Multiply this by 20 plus trucks and it is likely he will throw in the towel and sell the business. Now we will have 30 or more unemployed people out there if we figure in drivers, mechanics, office help and the owners. I'd rather see these trucks grandfathered into the system and become obsolete with age and usefulness rather than the workers. Lynn

ruttinbuc
For those of you who have streaming NetFlix there is a documentary that sheds a lot of light on what our addiction to oil will lead to. Quite an eye opener that deals with everything. The film is called "Blind Spot" and is about the catch 22 of using up the supply of fossil fuels or stop using oil and let the modern economy collapse. It was made in 2008. Some of what is brought to light is happening now. Just some food for thought.
