Local politics bite....

Ive been trying to help a Mennonite Church get clearance to build a new 5000sqft facility. In the state of Oklahoma we have very few building restrictions. Most restrictions are governed city to city.

This Church will go in the county and is going to be built by people who do or have constructed for a living. I drew plans for them to work from and was sure to follow the law concerning ADA requirements (stalls, ways of egress, heights, doors, etc.). Everything seemed simple....

However, the newer state fire Marshall has now made it to where any structure that will hold over 50 people must have a Licensed Architect set of plans (stamped) and two stamps from PE's (Professional Engineers).

Ergo, now this small church that likely has about 15 families is required to pay between $25,000 - $30,000 for the Architect stamp alone and then follow that up with a Structural Engineer stamp and a Mechanical Engineer stamp. Grand total will likely reach $40,000+ for the paper and required stamps! ..........and this is for a small church going out in the sticks!...........

They had almost all of their money and were thrilled to be breaking ground last fall.... ground breaking never happend. They still have a bare field and their dream is another $40,000 out.

Its really irritating. People cant even get a let up anymore. We are highly over regulated.

yep. and we're now on the 2008 ICBO regulations. ICBO is the international conference of building officials. that's right, china and russia tell us what and how to build. more costs for us. of course, their countries haven't adopted the code we have to use. what a bunch of bull.

now, i'll bet you can submit your plans to a good christian architec and p.e, and they will give your plans the "rubber stamp" approval you need for pretty cheat. i'll bet $1,000.00 each will do it, or $3,000.00 total. basically a bribe to cheat the county. go for it.
