magnatecsteve
As my pond thawed lately I have been seeing alot of fish dead, along with tadpoles and frogs. When the ice was all gone, I was actually pretty ticked off. I don't think a single fish made it. Went out yesterday and pulled buckets full of dead fish from the pond. Another sad thing was I didn't realize I had insanely huge crappie in my pond. This is my 4th year in this house and although I have caught several massive hybred bluegill, I never latched on to a crappie. Probably since I primarily fly fish it. Had three crappie at 12 inches and one at nearly 16 inches!! Ticks me off I never knew they were in there. Guess I get to start from scratch. It was a good winter up here with lots of snow, but we have had harder freezes before...
stevebeilgard
how deep is your pond? maybe it froze solid this year. sorry for the nice, dead fish.
magnatecsteve
Its got two deep holes one 14ft and one 10 to 12ft, about an acre in total size. just can't believe I haven't had any problems any other winter. I had to get the dead ones out of there since I have the house up for sale. Not a good selling point when all of the fish are floating... Tominator
Danged global warming. Sorry, bad joke. On the bright side though, I would think you could have a massive fish fry. The water was probably cold enough to keep the fish fresh?
msman825
do you think it froze that deep??
Shaun_300
Wow that's too bad! Could have been a lack of oxygen and not enough for all the fish to breathe. That's the only thing I can think of. If the rest of the pond is pretty shallow and froze solid it would have taken up a lot of space. Only thing I can think of. magnatecsteve
Idunno, the water was just a little lower than past years, but just 4 or 5 inches. NOOOO chance of a fish fry...they were pretty dang nasty!! Must have happened earlier in the winter because the eyes were even gone in most all of them. I guess it did get pretty cold around December up here for a while, that and it was a longer cold spell this winter without the freak warm-ups we have been used to.. All I know is I have one happy possum! I came home last night and almost hit the bugger in my driveway, he was headed for the fish pile in the neighboring cornfield. I think he was smiling.
woolybear
Just a thought, but could be an aration problem be the issue. Maybe you need to incorperate more aquatic vegitation to your system to produce more oxygen to your fishes.
birdhunter39
How deep is the pond, besides the 2 deep holes ?? It sounds like it froze completely . I would get one of those fish tank or pond water testers to check out the water balance , or it could be the lack of oxygen . Good luck with solving the problem
pendog
my dad raised trout in his ponds, he has a windmill designed to pump oxygen in to his ponds. they keep open the pond in certain areas above the o2 rocks. they work and you can split the lines to go into several sections of the pond or multiple ponds. no winter kill that i know of.
