Jeramie
I need to pickup a low end training collar for my Golden. She is at that point where one will be handy. I like some of the Tritonics and such but my wife isnt crazy about the pricetag. To be fair I do buy quite a but of hunting stuff... I have been looking at the 1000 yard Petsafe for large dogs. Anyone have any information or advice for them? I can get a new one off of ebay for $100. The only other option in that price range is the Sportdog 400. Its about the same price. However, I might add another collar and the the collar for the Sportdog is twice as high... The Petsafe wireless fence I put in works like a charm so I assume their high end training collar would to.... Suggestions? Advice? and seriously, keep in mind $100 is about all im spending on one... Marriage budget.
CoonChatter
I have the sportdog 400. It worked great until the K9 swam with it. It still works now, but only to a range of around 8 maybe 12 feet! I would buy it cash money so the wife cant track it and get a good waterfowler one for $250 or so. Jeramie
That would be nice but my company went to direct deposit about a year ago... She now knows what comes and goes... Being that I bought a new .30-06 not too long ago and ive been buying misc duck stuff for the dog (oh, and a new Charles Daly automatic shotgun last summer) Im guessing blowing another $250.00 may not set to well in her mind... Jeramie
I bit the bullet and bought the Petsafe Venture series. It should work fine for no more than I intend to do with it. I ran to Basspro yesterday and looked over all of their collars. I would love to have had a Tritonics but the price tag kept me away from those... I cant wait to put the collar to use. Im sure it will make a difference in my golden!

dogdoc
Tri-tronics and Sport Dog are the only two worth purchasing. Honestly the rest are pretty much junk. Lower end Tri-tronics like the sport models are really good collars. In now way could I train a finished retriever without a good collar. I have had my TT now for 6 years and have only had to replace the battery in the transmitter. Let me know if you ever need any help using the collar. Needs to be used correctly!! todd
Jeramie
I may hit you up Todd... the cheap one is on the way. I will eventually upgrade when I have cash the wife doesnt know about.... Im worried about breaking good habits with the collar. I know they can be as big a problem as a solve...
billkay
I shoot for Dogtra, and hence have several of their collars. I've never had any trouble with any of them.
hoosierhunter
I can second the dogtra. Having over 100 different shock levels and vibrate is very nice. Along with just the nic and the constant. Although I know I paid somewhere 240 I think for it online. The one negative I can say is battery memory pisses me off but it happens to everything.
