wtnhunt
Never really given a lot of thought to using a crossbow myself, but if my shoulder continues to give problems in the future might possibly look into it. State here has allowed use of crossbows during the general archery season for a while now and lot of people using them. A lot of crossbows on the market, what kind of suggestions to look at in an entry level hunting setup; brand, fps min, etc. Hear ranges are lesser than a compound, what kind of realistic expectations for use for whitetails with modern day average crossbows. BearClaw
I'm the same. The older I get the left shoulder has some bursitis in it and can be extremely painful on short notice. Might need a crossbow as well. Maryland opened up the crossbow to everyone for archery. One favor to ask, let's not bash our fellow hunters because of anyone's personal opinion about crossbows. I rarely post on another forum because that's what a lot of them like to do, bash other people because they don't agree with something. It's okay to disagree but your opinion is valid to you, not necessarily all of us. It's okay to express an opinion but don't smash others because your opinion is different. Please? Pretty sure there will be no tolerance here for bashing. Adding this room should be a good way to seperate discussions. Honestly don't know that I will ever pick up or try crossbow, and I was not exactly supportive of the change this state made at first when they first made the changes to allow them without a physician signed statement to show a disability, BUT if it gets more hunters in the woods it cannot be all bad. Never had any problems with drawing my bow or pain while drawing it, but got to face it that my shoulder is not getting any better the older I get. My left shoulder is where my problem is at as well. Any flames or bashing of the legal use of crossbows (or their users) won't be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly. Now, does anyone know how many states now allow crossbow hunting (for both disabled and able hunters)?
toddyboman
Now, does anyone know how many states now allow crossbow hunting (for both disabled and able hunters)? I think you have a physician fill out a form for you in order to use a crossbow in MO.....
Ravin R10 man
About time!...I think any weapon should be allowed for hunting deer as long as it is legal..including cross bows. Disabled or not.

Tim Andrus
As Ive said before we as hunters have to stop the infighting. Years ago when the compound bows came in the picture the traditional bow hunters were up in arms... Now look at the industry I was invited to Ohio this fall for a crossbow hunt and Im excited about it

VermontHunter
Vermont , Crossbows are Illegal for Hunting . Exception A crossbow may be used by special permit to take any game that may be taken by bow and arrow. This special permit, issued to a person so physically impaired that he or she cannot operate a standard bow, allows that person to hunt with a crossbow. A permit applicant must produce a licensed physician’s certificate certifying that the disability requires the use of a crossbow. Obtain an application from Fish & Wildlife in Waterbury before visiting your doctor. Applicant must also appear before a state game warden. Be sure to make an appointment ahead of time. I disagree with this law .. Edited March 20, 2011 by VermontHunter

wtnhunt
Now, does anyone know how many states now allow crossbow hunting (for both disabled and able hunters)? Tennessee started allowing crossbows for all hunters during the archery season back about 6 years ago. Prior to that it was allowed during archery only with a physician statement. 1 TN Maryland opened it up this year to all hunters. ckrich
5 IL with a signed form from you doctor stating for physical reasons u cant use a compound bow 6 OK Oklahoma legallized the use of crossbows for everyone this year. In the past you were required to be disabled or a senior citizen, but often it was too much of a chore to get the permit signed by a doctor, so many hunters just gave up. This year I have seen a great number of people get back into hunting by switching to a crossbow, and I think it's great. Also, I have noticed quite a few diehard archery hunters buying crossbows for their kids, wanting them to experience the rush of archery rather than popping one at 200 yards with a rifle. I'm not biased either way. More people interested in hunting in any legal form means more license/ tag sales, which reflects a continued interest in hunting and the outdoors, which in turn can have an influence on funding for our wildlife and conservation programs. Texan_Til_I_Die
Texas considers crossbows as legal archery equipment for use during the archery only season. Good luck to all the crossbow hunters out there. I've been thinking about trying one just because it looks like fun. Might be a nice change from time to time from my compound. hammerforged
I have been hunting with a crossbow for over 12 years now. I use a Horton Hunter HD175 (in Realtree HD, of course). I have never taken a shot over 40 yards in an actual hunt, however have made 3 Robin Hoods at 65 yards while practicing. Horton is not the company it used to be and neither are their products, if I were to get a new Crossbow I would most likely choose TenPoint over Horton, yes they cost more but the quality is there for the long haul. Bernard Horton who founded Horton Crossbows is a close friend and client but the company is not the same since he sold it and moved to South Africa. Barnett has a good name in the industry but their bows just don't seem to last like the Ten Point do and they are heavy. South Carolina allows all able bodied hunters to use a crossbow during bow season except on Game management land.
Flintlock1776
Works for me. Any legal device is fine even if I do not use it myself. Last year I finally bought a cross bow. I was always looking at the big and fancy ones but budget constraints kicked in. I wound up with a Parker Buck Buster 150 with a 4 dot scope. The Pro Shop set it up and it was accurate with the first and every shots I took since. One buck is down due to it. Very inexpensive compared to the more heavily advertised crossbows out there. The Parker is light and compact. It fit well in the Double Bull T2 blind. Some other cross bows would not have fit. I also got Cabela's Cub Bolts to use for discharge. Because: (1) I d not want to shoot a full bolt with a field point and have it get lost or broker (2) I do not want to scent up my hunting spot by trampling all over to find a bolt (3) the bolts are one-shot bio-degradable. :toot:
