Tim Andrus
Thought about trading the 06 chevy , Saw what new truck prices are , not sure I like those prices. Maybe the ol chev has another 97000 miles in her lol
TBow
I just sold my '98 Dodge Ram and picked up an '07 Silverado 2500HD last fall. It now has about 150,000 km (90,000 mi.) on it and hope it'll go the distance and give me 150,000 km more. To replace that buggy with a 2011 with similar options was between $50K to $60K cdn...OUCH! Unless I win a lottery, that'll just be a pipe dream. I've seen a lot of advertisements in the local papers showing price reductions for 2011 pickups running in the low to mid $20K cdn range, but the models shown don't have many options on them. So I guess if you want tires and a steering wheel on it (exagerated), it'll run the price back up into the $30K + range. I was getting sick of paying for repairs on a 10+ year old vehicle that was worth little to nothing, so moved up a few years to try and cut back on the vehicle doctor bills. wtnhunt
New prices are pretty ridiculous Tim, used almost new model trucks are also insanely ridiculous. Unreal how overinflated things have gotten these days. In a position here that we really need a new truck or at least a newer truck with 4 doors, we have to have an hd model for the farm, almost think for warranty purposes and finance options with the 0% offers out there that you come out better buying new than a 2 or 3 year old vehicle. BearClaw
Don't know how regular people like us can buy those things with prices the way they are. How can auto/truck manufacturers stay in business? (Oh yeah, bailout money!) THe economy stinks and yet they charge unreal prices. I guess I just don't understand? The housing market is the same way. ???
dbHunterNY
Yea my next vehicle will be a 4x4 truck. That said I looked at them and figure I'm going going to drive my little chevy cavalier into the ground until it dies. Between gas prices and not having a car payment it's hard to swing that much. When I do it'll be the most bare bones 4x4 with 4 person cab that i can find most likely. also looked at smaller pickups and they're just as much! jbeck
Tim just remember don't take money you don't have to buy something you don't need to impress people you don't like. : ) a truck that nickle and dimes you is still cheaper than 600 per month. I just put 2 head caskets in the wifes subaru cause 1000.00 bucks was cheaper than 500 per month. it has 184,000 on it and we are looking at getting another 100,000 out of it. clrj3514
If you're gonna go nearly new, you might as well get a new one. Prices aren't much different & you get the rebates.
The_Kat
Truck and car payments of $900+ are the new norm these days. It's sad in my opinion. New vehicles don't last as long as the older ones, yet cost more. I wouldn't own a new truck at all right now. Dodge had my heart til they went to their new style. Chevy had my heart til they changed to the new style in 07. I drive an 09 Chevy 2500 with 50k miles on it and it's worse than any older truck I have drove with 200k plus miles. TBow
My '98 Dodge Ram was paid for, but it was costing me, on average, $2400 per year to keep it maintained and on the road. Because the 318 in that Dodge was using more fuel than an Abrams A1 tank, it was costing me $300 per month to keep 'er topped up, 'cause I was always touring here, there and everywhere. So annually I was spending $6000 to drive a 13 year old 2WD, regular cab pickup that was starting to rust and held very little resale value. I now have a 2007, 2500HD, 4WD, extended cab, diesel, with drive train warranty, which runs me about $5700 per year in payments, little to no maintenance costs (at least for now), 200 per month in fuel, and still have a vehicle that has retained a descent equity should I ever opt to sell it. So my '07 is costing me $8100 to keep it moving on the road. That's only $2100 per year more than I was spending on my '98 Dodge beater that didn't have the options that I wanted. See you can do anything you want with numbers. So let's see. Hmmmm! Naught goesinto naught, naught times.......carry the naught.....!:shifty:
Adjam5
I hear ya 100% Tim...My 95 K1500 Silverado has 176,000miles on it and burns a little oil and don't leak. It has been nickle and diming me a bit here and there. But as was mentioned...Still cheaper than a new truck payment. Besides I always thought old trucks are cool. The paint ain't all that great on it, but I am not afraid to get blood and scratches on it . The 10mpg I can do without...but it only gets used on weekends when I head up to the country. But...I too, drool at the ads in the paper with the 0% 72 month financing:rolleyes: Chevy is running. Ford is making some sweet rigs too and I really like how Dodge has made the bed of the pick up into a gun case/holder.

Flintlock1776
Keep it going. Each month put away the exact amount of monthly payment you would be making if you had just bought the new truck today. Keep the old one going and if repairs will cost you the equivalent of one month's payment but you can keep it going for at least three months, pay for the repair. When the truck needs repairs either beyond the monthly amount you are saving or you have to make two consecutive payments THEN it is the time to buy the new truck. Hopefully, you will be surprised how much of a down payment you will have and that, in turn, will lower your monthly payment due. Good luck! Its an 2006 Silverado 4x4 Crew Cab. I bought it in 2007 for a little over $22,000. That was $5000 under blue book at the time. I found it on-line and saved a bundle. I also saved my dad $3000 when I found his truck on-line.

Newarcher
Thank a union member for the cost of your vehicle. I believe I read an article where the cost of their healthcare policy (which is outstanding coverage by the way) adds somewhere just shy of $2,000 to the cost of a new vehicle. Don't think that by purchasing a used vehicle you are avoiding those costs. The higher the cost of the new vehicle, the more residual value it has when you buy it used. I don't have any respect for unions as you can tell. I listen to Dave Ramsey a lot and after the great Ford buyout where some people were paid more than $100K to walk away from their job, he kept getting calls from union auto workers who couldn't find jobs to replace the salaries they were making. In many cases they were making $70 an hour. There are Lawyers and Doctors who don't make that. New
mike13candace
That is why I puchased a 4-year old truck. Could not justify the payment, insurance and in this state we has an excise tax every year. Make sure you do a carfax on it while you are with the sales person.
