You can shoot 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells with that gun.Make sure the barrel will take a 3 inch shell. If it is the original barrel you will have no problem.

It is the original as far as i know, somebody bought it and put it in the box and left it for a few years, then my dad bought it and i just shot it a few months ago and that was the first time it was ever shot according to my dad.

if it's a 20 gauge like you said, then i do believe you can shoot 2-3/4" and 3" shells

....magnums usually refer to 12 gauges that can shoot up to 3-1/2" instead of 3".

Have to disagree on this.If it shoots a 3 inch shell its called a magnum if it will shoot a 3-1/2 inch shell it is called a supermag. At least on remington shotguns

I stand corrected. I missed the marketing terminology change of magnum and now supermag. It used to be what I said, I believe. A while back the Rem 870 Express Mag was made and it's the same thing as a Rem 870 Express Supermag made now. It's all just a headache.

What I should've said was look at the stamping on your barrel. Assuming the gun is in well enough shape and you can read it. If it says you can shoot both 2-3/4" and 3", then you can. If you can't shoot a 3", it'll say [2-3/4" ONLY]. Now assuming the gun will chamber the 3" shell, have fun shooting 3" shells all day long.

Remington has used Super Mag for their 3-1/2" capable since the begining of their 3-1/2" guns. Magnum came about when they started making magnum loads such as the turkey and waterfowl loads and they needed guns to be able to handle these loads. The original was just a 870 Express which was a variation of the Wingmaster.

That's the good thing about these forums...wrong info will always get corrected. I've never owned an 870, however I swear I've had a couple people that do tell me there "express mag" could shoot the same 3-1/2" shells as my gun. Ignorance is bliss!

I did look into it and dsharp01 is right. In 1998, Remington introduced the Rem 870 Express Super Magnum and in four different versions, capable of shooting 3-1/2" shotshells.

So it has always been a Magnum versions shot up to 3" and Supermags shot up to 3-1/2" shells.

At least I'm pretty sure about the shell compatibility being stamped on the barrel.:bang: lol
