Anyone ever turkey hunt in the snow?

We just got 17" of wet, heavy snow. The extended forecast won't put us into the 30s again till mid to end of next week. We have our youth turkey learn to hunt program starting on April 2nd and will likely have over a foot of snow on the ground pending an unforeseen warm up.

So for those that donated hunting clothing a couple years ago to our youth hunt, thanks again. We'll be using them this year!!

I dont think we have ever had to hunt in snow here in KY, but I do remember a youth weekend about 3 years ago when the high temp that day was only in the 20s. My brother killed a pretty nice bird that morning. The birds gobbled alot, strutted and put on a show before he killed it. I remember him and dad coming home with his turkey, dressed as if they were late season deer hunting.

Turkey hunted in the snow just twice hunting Merriams in New Mexico. We drove through a bad snow storm to get where we were going to hunt the 1st time. Next morning (1st day of hunt) the sun came out and we called up several birds and my hunting buddy got 1. By mid morning though I felt like I was sitting in a ice cold shower setting up on trees to work birds. I was miserable! Didn't go prepared for that! I did go prepared for it the next time I hunted there. I managed to kill my 2 birds the 2nd & 3rd days after the snow had melted out of the trees at least...thank goodness.

The last several nights it has been at or below zero. The snow is barely melting any during the day with highs in the upper 20s and finely now around 34 today. We have well over a foot of snow on the ground in most areas with more in the woods. The birds are staying on the roost late into the morning because they are having a hard time walking.

The kids in the hunt will likely not forget this season for a long time. The birds will be hard to call within range when the snow is so deep.

Back in 2000 or 2001 (I forget ) we got a couple inches in mid may, sat on a roosted bird until 8:30, couldn't take it anymore, hands were frozen. Gobbler flew off when I got up. That was after I had 4 hens walk with in inches of me. He had two more in the tree and didn't want to leave them. Damn nice gobbler too!
