wtnhunt
Rather than get out in the heavy downpour and lightning and thunder before light for the youth hunt weekend opener I let Christina(lilmisswtnhunt) sleep in til about 7. Turned out to be a good move. Weather broke for a little while and we took off with a plan to make a long circle around the property stopping and listening and watching and a little calling from a few spots. Figured the birds should be pushed up in the hills with all the rain and chances were the ground would be flooded where we would have went to had the bad weather not moved in. We got about 100 yards into our walk and both thought we heard a hen. Used the ridges to kind of pop up in a few spots I wanted to watch with the binos, saw nothing and heard nothing else. Got to the old logging road that runs in behind our neighbors barn and figured we would work our way down to the last ridge going that direction before it runs down to the slough and use the terrain to our advantage as best as possible. We headed off the logging road and towards a fencerow and movement caught my eye along the fence and knew it was a bird. Christina was behind me, motioned to her to get down and get ready. Got the binos up and saw it was a pretty good bird. She did not see it yet. At this point we were probably 15-20 minutes into her hunt. Bird had to have had a hen somewhere nearby we did not see. He kept walking the fence back and forth, then he found a hole in the fence and started actually coming towards us. He never saw us. I pointed and told Christina to crawl up to a tree to our left and in front of us about 7 yards away and she did little by little when the bird would get behind a tree. I was pretty well stuck in the open and did not move other than to kneel down at a point when a tree was between me and the bird as he was working back and forth. Christina managed to get up behind the tree and got sat down and her knee up and got the 870 youth gun up in position. I heard her flip the safety off and whispered to her to wait, bird was still coming closer and I wanted it to be inside 35 yards, thought he was but with the bird coming closer thought we would let it. Bird was strutting working back and forth and inching closer and closer. Don't know how he did not see me, realtree ap baby, gotta be the most effective pattern going. Guess there was just enough ground clutter with the early green up for him to not be able to figure out I was there. Christina had a good hold, told her when the bird broke strut and she had a clear shot to take it and she did. She hammered her first bird, it flopped and was done with the 3 inch #5 remington nitro load doing its job effectively. Never hearda single gobble and I never took a call out of my vest. Bird weighed 20.25 lbs. 3/4 inch spurs on both sides and a 9 3/4 inch beard, did not realize it was that long until putting a tape on it. Not too bad for a first bird. Real proud of you Christina, you done good. Offered to carry it for her, but she said she would get it. Good thing it was not a real long walk. Flintlock1776
Very smart not to be holding a metal pipe during a lightening storm. Hunting should be about the experience and you sure showed you daughter a lot besides getting a nice Tom. Cherish the moment, the memory and the pictures. Time flies too fast! Congrats!
