Newarcher
Hi, I have a question for dogdoc. I have some old shed antlers that I found and I was wondering if I could give my boston terrier and my kid's rabbits some shed antlers to chew on. I know my dog likes them because I have an old small pair on my four wheeler and he always tries to climb up and get them. Thanks, New
Alisha
I'm certainly not dogdoc , but just had to add that our two labs have antler sheds to chew on. Most times they are cut down like this to keep from sharp edges: http://www.bestbullysticks.com/home/bbs/page_123_25/large_antlerz.html Notice how much these things go for? Our dogs LOVE them! Have heard of the rare time or two though that a dog has broken a tooth on one where they are so hard but we haven't had any issues. IMO they are better/tougher than 99% of the dog chew toys you can buy.

Alisha
I bought ours.... so I wouldn't have a clue. Sorry! I'm assuming with a mitre saw or something?

stevebeilgard
i'm guessing it will be bad for a dog. i see splinters piercing the intestines eventually. we'll see what dogdoc says.
Alisha
i'm guessing it will be bad for a dog. i see splinters piercing the intestines eventually. we'll see what dogdoc says. My chocolate lab is a power chewer and has not managed to splinter/chip one yet - which is also why they're so popular. If anything, the only way you would have to replace one is if it was chewed down to a size where the dog would be in danger of swallowing it. hoosierhunter
I give hemi an antler as well. Don't be suprised when it becomes very easy to train them to find sheds in the woods once the associate the horn with reward. Hemi has found several in the woods this season along with 4 dead ones. Can't beat a dogs nose!
dogdoc
fine for the rabbit--would pass on the dog though. Could easily break a tooth or if swallows a large chunk it could cause an obstruction. I have several laying around and my lab never even messes with them. todd
Newarcher
Thanks everyone! I'll give the rabbits an old shed I found. They are MEAN critters...attacking for no reason other than the fact that I am trying to pet them. Little turds! New
