Kentucky youth weekend success!

This weekend was our youth season here in Kentucky, and my youngest brother had never killed a turkey. Me and my dad roosted birds at a couple different farms this week and felt like we had some birds figured out for him.

Yesterday morning was perfect for turkey hunting, clear, calm and 38 degrees. We went to one of the farms we had roosted some birds at and set up within 100 yards of them. As it began to get daylight birds were hammering everywhere, and there were 2 directly in front of us on top of a hill. They flew down gobbled for a while, then went the other direction. We tried to find some later in the morning with no luck, and the wind got to blowing really hard so we quit for the day

Fast foward to this morning. Same weather conditions but about 3 degrees warmer. We went to a different farm this time, where I had scouted and watched some birds earlier in the week. We set up well before daylight on the edge of a hayfield, and when the skies began to lighten, 2 birds started gobbling across the field from us. We did some light calling and about 20 minutes after shooting light one bird came out into the field in full strut. I was in the process of getting the video camera on him when all of a sudden I see another bird running towards us from the right. I had my Pretty Boy strutter decoy and a couple hen decoys out, and he was coming for a fight! The other bird broke strut also and both came charging right into the decoys and my brother dropped one at 18 yards. It was an awesome hunt, and I got it all on video.

This is his first turkey, after trying for 3 years. Weighed 22 pounds, with a 9 inch beard, and 3/4 inch spurs.
