woolybear
I think they're all great shots and the subjects are all just as interesting. Without sounding too overly critical, here are my thoughts. #1- I like the simplicity of this shot and the rustic looking lighting on the glove with the over saturation, but it seems to be lacking something. Maybe a bat, or base, or jock strap, or cold brew....I dunno, lol. Nice clean ball and sharp focus really says what this ones all about to me though. #2- You can't go wrong with a tiger pic! I like the way you caught the mood of one of the ultimate predators in a tranquil state. Just wish the focus was more on the face instead of the paw pad. It just seems a little flat to me towards the head where most viewers eyes are going to look at first. #3- I like the story line behind the photo most over the rest of them. It makes you think how that skull got there, what he died from, and where the heck the rest of him is,lol! May have been a little sharper if the background was a bit more in focus along the tree line to give a better feel of where this buck may have come from and a slight boost in contrast between the skull and snow could help some. I may have bumped the F-stop up a tad here. #4- I don't comment on pictures of little boys,lol...,jk. It is a nice shot, with a certain mood to it by the look in his eyes but without any surroundings in the photo, I can't tell where he is or what he looks so disturbed about. I like the way you work on your composition in your photos. I have a terrible time setting up any of my shots. Hope you don't take offence to any of my critique efforts. One of the best things around I've seen on a few photo forums is to give both positives and negatives when someone asks for opinions the way you did here. IMO, it's the best way to learn you'r strong points and your weaknesses. Good luck in the contest! Let us know how you make out.:camera: Edited April 14, 2011 by woolybear
JMAN
#1. Like woolybear said, the simplicity of this shot is absolutely remarkeable. The second I saw it I instantly went to my childhood trying out for the baseball team for the first time with a glove just like this. I also get an internal message to the picture with the shiny new ball against the old worn glove as it reminds me of the timelessness of baseball throughout the years - the old and the new. I personally think this picture is perfect just the way it is. #2. I personally don't care for this picture at all but let me explain why. A tiger in an enclosed chamber is not a tiger...it is a caged animal. Beautiful animal - background is totally wrong. I too believe the focus was more on the paw than the head and it would be better if those rolls were reversed. Again this is just my personal reflection so please take no offense in what I write. #3. This too is a truly special picture with many psychological reflections as woolybear already pointed out. I too would have liked a little more focus in the background I think but I truly do enjoy this picture. This pictures gets first place for making my mind run wild! #4. Honestly....boring to me but please don't tell your brother. I don't see any substance to the photo. I do think you have an excellent eye for photography and look forward to seeing more pics from you. As you can tell from above, my favorites are numbers 1 & 3.
