Bird Down

I made it out this morning for Ohio's opening day of turkey season. I set up in the exact place I shot my opening day bird last year. At first light, there were a couple gobblers going at it a couple hundred yards away. Once they hit the ground, all went silent... which is pretty typical for hunting early season. This was probably 6:45-7ish.

I decided ahead of time to stick it out in the blind until at least 9:00am before I made a move as the birds always seem to move through this area at some point during the day. I'd call every 15 minutes or so but didn't hear a gobble until about 8:40ish and he was with several hens from what I could hear. I got the hens fired up a few times and he'd gobble his head off, double, triple gobbles. Finally I see the the white head moving through the woods not more than 50 yards away. i didn't call a lot after i spotted him, just enough to keep him interested. He'd strutted back and forth at the 30 yard mark but would stay behind a big tree and some brush and would not offer a shot. Probably 15-20 minutes of him peaking his head around each side of the tree and brush, I was finally able to get a good bead on him... bird down! :gun1:

Definitely an exciting and fun hunt and I'm glad I decided to wait it out in the blind... he's 22 lbs, 10" beard, 3/4" spur (one broken off)... not the biggest bird but he sure looked like a 30pounder coming through the woods. :D
