30-30

If it is scoped, I'd give the Hornady Leverolutions a try. They have pretty good reviews but I am unsure of a bullet weight for ya. Otherwise when I was a kid, my brothers and I all killed our first buck with the same Marlin 30-30. We always used the Federal flat tipped 150s or the round nosed 170s. When it comes to ammo, Federal and Hornady has always treated me very well.

The selection of factory loaded 30-30 ammo is pretty limited. Pretty much, everybody offers a 150 and 170 grain flat-point loading. Either, or..................not really convinced one or the other is superior. Just see what Dad's rifle shoots well and go kill deer with it. Not sure that the LeveRevolution stuff will be of much or any advantage to you under 100 yards.

I'll second the core-lokt Ken. Very sentimental about my old 94. Killed my first deer with it, looks like it tamed the west with all it's wear and tear, but still mechanically sound as ever. Got a '66 Marlin model 366 now, with a nice scope I picked up the other day, but it doesn't hold a candle to the 94 in my book.

Core-lokts will serve you well IMHO

If you can find them....I've used Winchesters 125 grain hollow points in the past. Shot well and did a number on a few doe I shot with them.

But like it was said earlier...whatever shoots well outta the gun will be your best bet...they'll all perform if properly placed.

Same here! model 94 shooting Rem green box 150gr soft point core-lokt ammo. My first deer was a 6 point buck and was taken with that gun. it's got a hammer extension and a tasco 3-9x30 on it. My dad used it before me and after me was my brother. Out to 100 yards you really don't need to worry about bullet type. It would hold well within 2 MOA groups which is definitely accurate enough, but the 30 cal 150gr lead mushrooms seemed to work great on deer.

Love the 94's.

Beware though. And some will disagree with me. They aren't the safest gun ever built. I have had 2 older models which I could get to drop the hammer when the stock was slammed onto a hard surface[ floor ]. These were models built before the little button under the lever was introduced. After that you had to squeeze the lever slightly to get the hammer to drop. [ added safety feature, if you will ]

I have shot REM. 170 gr. at 100 yd. plus with good results. They drop off fast after 150 yd. but a little range time can can get you familiure with it. 200 yds. would be my max.

The 30-30 is known a a good brush gun. It is, especially in a carbine model. This doesn't mean it will mow brush down though. It simply means the gun is easier to handle while traversing through heavy brush.

Love that gun. It was your dad's!

Try different bullets. They are realitively inexpensive for your gun.

Ranger Clay might be on to something with the Hornady bullets. I haven't tried them myself, but he won't steer you wrongly.
