I took my son Hunter (age 17) and my son Marshall (age 13) for a turkey hunt on Friday morning, and after a long rain shower, and me being summoned to work, the day was cut short. Now, here comes Saturday.....set up a B mobile strutter, and hen decoy 15 yards from the brush we were hiding in. The morning couldn't of been more perfect, at dawn all we heard were gobblers sounding off in the woods 150 yards in front of us, and they gobbled for hours with nothing but time on their hands. Here is the scoop, in Illinois, your "granted" a season of choice, and you hunt only that season, my season, along with my son Hunter was 5 days long. I have five kids to feed, along with me and the wife, so if we have an opportunity to shoot a legal bird, well...I eat gobblers most years, but will not turn down a Jake for dinner. That being said, we had a huge bird come right in on our decoy, he had two running hens with him, and he got within 30 yards, and before Hunter my son could put the shot on him, his spidey senses kicked, in and he hauled out of there. No harm, no foul, I left the brush, repositioned the decoys farther down the hill, and stared into the brush, and told Hunter to cover his shiny forehead, and to tuck into the brush better..lol, lesson learned. Not 15 minutes later, we watched a coyote running two young deer through the turkey woods, and whala, here comes two gobbling birds to my sons soft purrs...when all said and done, they were two healthy Jakes and they began pecking the B mobile in the mouth..lol...well, seven yards, and loads of 4 shot, we have two fine birds for the freezer. God Bless America, I had an absolute blast hunting with my kids...and when I opened up the birds, they were FULL of MINT leaves...good tasting birds ahead...lol...Good luck to all. al(photos coming with the help of Buckee)
