Rhino
Who else uses turkey season to do post season scouting for deer? I sure do. For one thing it allows me to know the lay of the land on our place far better than most...not to mention seeing last years deer rubs without any concern about messing things up. Also I was sitting on the same tree 2 mornings where I ended up killing my 3rd gobbler. During the 1st sit I had 4 deer pass inside the 20 yuard line...2 does & 2 fawns. During the 2nd sit (6 days later) 15 minutes after my close encounter with the boar, I had a large body deer pass inside the 10 yard line. It was just a little too early to check for possible early antler growth but the deer was too big to be a doe. 2 mornings with deer at chip shot range...that tree's going to be wearing one of my hang-on stands before October 1st. wtnhunt
I try to Al, unfortunately have not had much time for turkey hunting this year, only really been once so far this year since the regular season opened and had an hour and a half long battle with a bird that hung up about 75 yards out, never could get him to come onto our property across the river. Thought the bird was on our property when I setup on him and adjusted a few times only to later figure out he was just on the other side of the water(our line), probably should be a post for the turkey room. lol. I did notice though during the youth hunt weekend that the main deer trails were so beaten down and in many places muddy, they were very easy to see which is normal every year at the end of the winter. Everything is so green here now what was visible a month ago is not so clear anymore. I do have one certain tree I am thinking about setting a stand at though, from what I saw of this years pre green up sign I confirmed that it would be a great setup. Far as rubs go, there is one particular area with concentrated rubs I see every spring. I try not to push into that area, but did walk through looking for sheds back before turkey season and I busted out a sole deer I am sure was a buck. I won't go back in there if I don't have good reason. Suppose those deer you had so close will still be using the same trails come fall. rhine16
Yep, sure do. Seems like I always find a trail or spot during turkey season that I'll hang a stand on for the coming fall.
redkneck
Sure do Al, scouted some new ground this year before it all greened up on mornings I couldnt get on a bird, (which is most mornings) :fish:

Tominator
I use turkey season to look around for mushrooms, does that count?
Rhino
Suppose those deer you had so close will still be using the same trails come fall. I do William...Got some history hunting that area...last year I was hunting a main frame 5x5 with kickers off both G2's close to or on the field below where I killed that 3rd gobbler. Can't say why for sure but I chose to hunt him conservatively. Got 1 look at him at last light on 10/8 hunting a natural blind on the field that's ~200 yards away from that tree. Where he entered limited the options of trails he could use to go there from that bedding area. The field's planted in alyce clover this year like it was last year so they should have a summer pattern going back & forth to feed there. I use turkey season to look around for mushrooms, does that count? If it get's you in the woods looking for deer sign too...yea. BTW...there's another spot I noticed a lot of deer activity while listening for roosted gobbling birds this spring. It's at the base of a high point to another area good for listening. More often than not I saw deer using the same trail near the base of this hill but it's still above the creek bottoms. If I recall correctly I saw deer there 4 out of the 6 times while I was standing there. I never spent more than 30 minutes there listening. Just does & fawns passing through but sure worth a shot to smack a doe, if one passes through before a buck. RangerClay
Absolutely! Now is the best time to see deer trails.
Dawg
If I turkey hunted, then I probably would. There aren't any turkeys around my neck of the hunting woods.
HUNTINGMAN
I like to also and shed hunt to. I have only been able to get in the woods after turkeys one time so far this year and season has been in since the 16 of the month.
ruttinbuc
I always have deer on my mind when turkey hunting. The best time to be in the woods looking for sign and terrain features you might not see at other times of the year.
Leo
You sometimes find awesome deer sign while deer hunting. It's good information but not a substitute for pre-season scouting. Here's what I've personally run into in these super hot areas you find during spring turkey season. True these areas are where the deer end up at the end of the season, no doubt. They aren't necessarily the best places at the beginning of the season. Save the places you find during turkey season until the end of deer season
