They're out by the billions. The noise is non-stop and they are munching down on my new crepe myrtles! The only good thing is my dogs don't need to be fed much, they really like gobbling these things up all day long.

You can shake them off the tree and it will look just like this in less than five minutes later.

I'll have to see what I can spray. They generally are safe for trees, but I just planted these nursery trees. Cicadas are out every year, but this is the year of the great southern brood, they hatch every 13 years and come out of the ground by the trillions across the southease with their constant buzzing. They'll breed and die and we'll see thier young ones thirteen years from now.

There's too many chickens and cows in this world for me to eat an oversized fly.

cicadas are like fine wine it tastes better with age , i'm sure theres a cook book for them , i wonder how cicada pot pie would taste or cicada gumbo would taste ??

I'll just say I haven't gotten that hungry yet. Post the recipe up and maybe thirteen years from now when they return times will be much harder and I can dig up this thread.

They will be back here in a couple years. Our last outbreak was in 2004. I remember them all over Muirfield Country Club at The Memorial that year. Almost made $20 when Ohiobucks dared me to eat one. Thankfully a little girl came up and asked me if she could have it as I was pondering the 3 beers I could buy with the $20. :D

I hear the emerging ones are best to eat. Apparently tasting like a mild potato. You're supposed to eat them before they fill their wings though.

Pretty cool! Cicadas are special IMO...they only come out so many years...there's different types as well.

Yep! I say the same thing... Its not every year you get to see them!

Wont be long and you will have little shells hanging all over everything. ;)
