Turkeygirl
I feel worse than when I missed the big gobbler last spring. I slept in this morning after working 36 hours this weekend. Got up, showered, out the door by quarter after 8. Decided to run and gun, see if I could spot something in a field or elicit a gobbler. Well walked along a few fields, stopping and yelping with my box call. Came to another field and saw a turkey out in it. Well snuck down into the woods to work around it next thing I know it's gone...I have no idea how it saw me. Well get up to almost the top of the field and a trespasser pops out and makes a sraight line right for the barn wire fence line of a neighboring farm...what a jerk. He made his way quickly back over to the other side, that's for sure. so now I know why the turkey spooked. Well work my way up to the other land I got permission to hunt. Well I come out into a field on this land and see something about 30 feet away dead in the grass. As I walk up, my heart sinks...It's a nice gobbler dead in the field, 1 breast and 1 leg eaten, head/neck torn off and gone....I at least got to salvage the spurs - about 3/4" long. What a shame...I walked the path where he'd been dragged, I would guess he got nabbed yesterday, didn't even smell yet. Either he was shot and escaped or, which is what I think is more likely, was strutting and a fox or something snuck right up on him. Talk about a major bummer.... I did get a pic I'll post but geepers, I'm bummed out. Will keep checking out this land, it's still early in the season, try and find a new bird, but probably hit some state land again...
dbHunterNY
my cousin and one of my uncles were at my great grandmother's farm and i was at my parent's farm. neither one of us heard a gobble. I didn't even see a turkey opening morning!! there was a gobbler hammering way out off the property but that's it. hoping this season is going to change for the better. hoping the yotes and a hard winter didn't wipe a bunch out. Turkeygirl
Yeah db...this is the 3rd turkey I've found this spring...I found feathers in 2 diff. spots earlier in the spring from presumed kills... I think it's a bit early...everything got pushed behind with the weather. This time last year trees were farther along in leaf bloom, my mom's forsythias were blooming. Right now they are just starting to open and tres are just budding... Saturday night I roosted a bird on a ridge not to far from this field...so I'm thinking it may have been him...:-(
ruttinbuc
That is too bad, TG. You just don't know what happened with the bird. The trespasser is another story. As for the greening of spring it is super thick here already. With all the moisture it doesn't take but a few warm days and things explode. It helps in a way. Just have to keep from seen in the open. Turkeygirl
Well good news is went out tonight...walked up to the gravel pit ridge, no gobbles. Drove over to the other ridge up the road, no gobble from that one but heard a birg gobble twice from back over by the gravel pit ridge I think...so if it's not raining too hard, will try it in the AM. dsharp01
I went roosting last night and had it spoiled by a yote running around. Not good new for my area. If he comes in to my calls he'll be a dead dog.
Turkeygirl
Agree dsharp...any fox/coyote that decides to come eat my turkey decoy is possibly getting a load of #5 in the head....
Rhino
I've found a few like that in the past too Ruth. Needless to say...it's a bummer. If there are hens in the area chances are another gobbler will find them.
