92xj
After calling in over 30 birds for family, friends and everyone else and their brothers on the east coast for the past 7 years, I figured it was my time to actually hunt for myself. I set out to hammer a monster Tom but these west coast birds are a lot different than the ones I am used too. They do not like calls, will not respond to them and will ignore them, so it was time for a spot and stalk. I crawled within 30 yards of this bird. Nice fan, 5" beard beat to heck, half or more was gone, what was there was broken to bits and he had no spurs. I finally found some big Toms after I killed this guy, so hopefully next weekend one of them will fall. No more youngins for me.

WHISKEYSWAMP
nicely done... congrats on your first! :cool2: Just from the pics and the coloring of the head, it looks like it could be a bearded hen...?
92xj
Do hens have any spurs? This bird has them starting to grow but nothing more than a nub.
WHISKEYSWAMP
on rare occasions, I'm sure they could have spurs... just like it's rare for them to have beards. 1st thing I thought of when you described it was Dakota's hermaprodite bird from Wyoming. http://www.realtree.com/forums/turkey-hunting/85139-once-lifetime-turkey-down-wyoming.html Either way... nice looking bird. congrats! 92xj
Sounds exactly like Dakota's. I wish his pics were still posted so I could compare the two. All I see in his thread are red Xs.
dbHunterNY
congrats.... i believe about 10% of hens have beards. i think all turkeys have very small nubs to start out, but only toms will start growing spurs. tail feathers make it not a hen though.
