Tominator
OK, so I need a cordless drill, but I think I'd rather have a trail camera for my father's day gift. I'd like everyone's thoughts on this if you don't mind. I don't want to go with a homebrew, and I want to stay under $300. I'm thinking this camera will stay on my property to reduce the chances of it getting stolen. Thanks in advance!
wtnhunt
I don't want to go with a homebrew, and I want to stay under $300. In that price range, best you are probably gonna get will either be a cudde or a leaf river. Come off a little more and you might be able to get a reconyx. Leaf river's customer service used to be top notch, but they got away from that and that is NOT just my opinion. Seems to still be some mixed opinions out on cuddes attempts to repair the poor customer service image they had a few years back. I would probably also look at the moultries if it were me just because you could probably get more for your money.
ruttinbuc
I have been hearing and reading good things about the Bushnell trophy cams. They seem to do a heck of a job for the price. I'm in agreement with William on the Leaf River. They wanted me to pay for an issue that was a fatal flaw in their design. Their CS is not anywhere near what you can expect from Bushnell Edited May 27, 2011 by ruttinbuc
VermontHunter
Chris, I have been using the Bushnell Trophy Cams for the past couple of seasons with super results. The trigger speed is good and the picture quality is great, as for the battery life I didn't have to change out the AA's once, in fact I'm using the very ones I used last season, this season ... Here is my setup, along with some pics ... Setup ... Some actual cam pics ... Jay over on Archerytalk is running some great deals on trailcams ,, I dealt with him on mine and he's super to deal with .. http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1496507 Hope this helps abit ,,, I know it's tough deciding with all of the choices and options out there. I have a LR IR 7SS....Takes good pics when the animals are still...has video with sound, haven't tried that yet.
Ethan Givan
Another vote for Moultrie cams from me. Thats the only brand of camera I have ever used and I have had zero problems. You could get a couple moultrie cams for that price range. They take decent pics. I bought mine 3 years ago I think, and they have nicer, newer models out now for basically the same price. elkoholic
Well, for a cordless drill I would go with Porter Cable, but you may just get more enjoyment out of a trail cam. There are a lot of options in the trail cam line. Currently I am interested in Leupolds new trail cam, which should be available pretty soon. You need to buy it as a kit and can then buy extra cameras if you want. With Leupolds great optics, this should be a good camera, but as yet I have not found any feed back on it. Here is one website you can get it from with free shipping: Leupold RCX-2 Trail Camera System Kit from Eagle Optics Of course you could hardly go wrong with any of the name brands (unless you get a lemon), and all of the "mini" versions seem to have excellent battery life. Personally, I would go with a Stealth Cam if not the Leupold.
hoosierhunter
Tominator- First I would consider what situations you want to use the camera in. If your primarly using it at a baited sight or scrape where the deer is standing still then trigger speed is irrelevant for that use. Do you want a succession of pictures or just one every 15-30 seconds? Flash types? Black flash(no flash), Red Flash(varies by model), White Flash. As many people know I run 2 Reconyx and 2 Cuddeback cameras. The reconyx is outstanding but very pricey still. The cuddeback doesn't false trigger, but you only get one picture of your deer so you can't get a good profile. Honestly the new cuddeback attack has my interest because of the 5 meg night pics. I have found that with a cuddeback and Reconyx(two best triggers in industry) on the same tree that the reconyx triggered 4 times more on the same 30 second setting. That's because the dection zone for the reconyx is so much larger than the cuddeback. The cuddebacks "centered subject technology" simply means that the dection cone is extremely small and centered for the camera so unless the deer is dead center it won't trigger a picture. Lucky Lady can you post some nighttime pics of that covert? I like the day pictures and I'm curious about the night time with motion and stuff like that. mikebohio
i have 3 cams. a moultrie and two wildviews. the moultrie has never given me a single problem in the 4yrs ive had it. my only complaint is i get alot of false pics. the wildviews are both junk. in two years one is completely broke and the other only works when it feels like it. on the other note cordless drills are terrible fathers day gifts. Quick search and looks as though they are available in the next week or so. The "kit" for the rcx1 can be purchased for around $229.
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
I just got into cams last year. Right now I have a Primos 46 and a Wildgame Innovations IR4. Both seem to get the job done. A lot cheaper than what you are looking to spend Chris (the Primos only cost me $129, IR4 was less than $100) If I were to buy a new camera right now (which I have been thinking about doing), I would look hard at the Bushnell cameras. wtnhunt
Just my opinion on bushnell, but I am not a fan of their customer service or their policy and personally I would never buy anything from them ever again. Any company that acquires/buys other companies should assume responsibility for that companies products, bushnell exempts themself from any responsibility and the lifetime warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on. Bushnell does not honor the lifetime warranties of companies under their ownership and they will charge for repairs if they can even repair those products, not sure how that speaks for products they brand with their own label and how they might attempt to weasel out of making repairs. Further more than one representative at bushnell flat out lied to me when I asked about one of the lines of cabelas optics that was produced by tasco/bushnell saying that product was not one that they produced.
