Free Floating a Remington 700 mountain rifle

Recommended Posts

I have a Remington Mountain Rifle in 30-06 that will shoot 3/4 inch groups from a cool barrel at 100 yards. I was wondering if free floating the barrel might help shrink those groups. I have heard mixed reviews about this because of the very thin barrel. A lot of people have told me that these thin barrels sometimes need a little preseeure on the barrel. What do you guys think.

I wouldn't even consider it. 3/4 inch groups in ahunting rifle? What more do you want? I'd be scared it would be worse afterward.

There are those with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" mentality, and those with "Hmmm, how good can it shoot?" mentality. I am in the latter group. I would not hesitate to float the barrel and do a proper bedding job. If the gun shoots worse afterwards, you (or your gunsmith) can always build a pressure point with bedding compound to take it back like it was. Fron the few dozen rifles I have tweaked, I did not find one that needed a pressure point. All shot better floated. Having said that, I do know of guns that did need pressure points to shoot their best.

Thanks AJ. I was thinking of having the action pilar bedded and then bedding it and floating the barrel. I know I am probably splitting hairs but if it shoots this way from the factory then I think it might have more potential. I have adjust the factory trigger down to about 2.75 pounds but I am also thinking of going to a Jewell trigger to see if I can pick up any imporvements there also.

I too have a Mountain Rifle, but mine is in 270 win. I just removed the action from the stock and sent the action to Hill Country Rifle Co. for a new synthetic stock. As a result, I have a brand new laminated stock that I can't use. If you know anyone who is interested, I would cut them a deal.

Are the stocks for a short action, and long action different? I have a .243 Mountain Rifle. If it is the same I would be interested in that.
