NS whitetail
Thursday evening, I was splitting wood with a woodsplitter, well as some of you will know, sometimes the wood will still be held together with stands of the wood. As I have done many times, I spread the wood piece apart and finish the split with the axe. I was holding the piece steady with my left hand and when I swung the axe, the wood sprung together and my thumb was there. When I saw it, I knew I was in a mess. My brother took me to the local hospital emergency, but all they could do was put all the pieces of bone, tendon cartlidge inside the cut and stich it up. I had to make a 3 hour drive to the city of halifax at 5 am yesterday morning to the major hospital and see a plastic surgeon. After 2 1/2 hours in the surgery room, with two surgeons and a few nurses, we hope it will be fixed to work again. The Dr. told me that I couldn't have made a worse mess of my thumb than I did. The tendon was cut off in two places, the cartlidge all cut off, bone cut off and the rest crushed. His exact words were " I am going to try and put it back together like they did Humpty Dumpty" I think I'll loose my mind with this half arm cast on for 5-6 weeks, but I still have my thumb and hopefully it heals to be workble again. Ravin R10 man
Nice one Lewis.....hope it heals ok..how can something so simple go so wrong? "suggestion"... When that happens with the wood I'd just flip it around end for end, right back on the splitter and cycle it part way..worked every time the only thing i needed my axe for is to chop off turkey heads-wings-legs Edited June 12, 2011 by Mathews XT Man

Glad it wasn't worse. you can't see the real damage from the pic, the surgeon said it don't get any worse than what I did , I didn't get a pic of all the gruesome stuff lol. my 6 1/2 year old son has been chasing me around all day with a little tiny axe that came with his lego fire truck, I've been screaming and he thinks it is so funny lol

wtnhunt
Sorry to hear that Lewis, looks like that was probably pretty darned painful. Hope it heals fully for you. Another simple way to make sure that never happens again would be to prop your log with another log and keep both hands on the axe, no chance of hitting your hand or fingers if they are on the handle. Turkeygirl
OUCH! Wow...hope you heal ok...might not be 100% but one of the concerns is infection...
