Dawg
There's a wildfire burning close to my home. By the way the crow flies its ~5 miles. Right now we are under a voluntary evacuation. Its burned upwards of 2000 acres and was 70% contained last night but we have strong south winds today which has caused it to flare back up. Supposedly started by some idiotic backwoods river rats shooting propane bottles. They ran off leaving their cooler full of beer behind. I hope they get caught. Keep us in your thoughts/prayers if ya don't mind!

Dawg
Seems for every two steps the firemen take forward, the fire forces them back 4. The past two nights they have been able to slow the fire considerably but when the day gets hot and the wind picks up, the fire rages again. The wind is already blowing steady today and we are expected to get gusts of 35 mph. They've had one small heli (pictured above) with a 250 gallon water bucket and a Chinook heli with a larger bucket dropping water along with two planes dropping fire retardant on the flames. The last I heard it had totally destroyed 8 camp houses and almost 3000 acres. If it continues on it's path the dam and hydroelectric power plant are in it's way. If it jumps the road to the north of it (which is the direction it is moving) it will be within 2 miles of my house.

Dawg
The fire has been contained, thank the Lord. We also recevied some rain in the wee hours of the morning today and are expected to get a little more. The fire has consumed an estimated 4000 acres now. There is another larger fire in the county northwest of me, last I heard it had burned over 15,000 acres. There's also another fire that started in a county to the west of me, it caused mandatory evacuations in the small community of Rockland. It was contained last night and had burned 500 acres. According to an article I read yesterday, over 2.6 million acres have burned in Texas this year. We need the rain!!!!!!!!
92xj
Do you know who owns the land where this fire was, or any other fire close by? If not, find out and go ask them if you can hunt it late season. I have scouted a lot of fresh burns which people say will hold no deer and the deer will come back in a few years, not so true. I have seen some huge deer and elk in week old burns out here. Might be worth a shot and that one a mile from the house would be a lot nicer drive. Dawg
We received 3" of rain Tuesday and that pretty much knocked out the rest of the fire that remained. In the end it consumed 4,200 acres. The land is owned by the timber company The Campbell Group and is leased out to the members of Hog Creek Hunting Club.
