perrysbirds
Just wondering if anyone here from the forum is from Wyoming or has hunted turkeys in Wyoming... I got a tip while doing some research for some property to hunt in Wyoming and I maybe heading there next April to try to get a merimams towards my grandslam.. Anyone have any info to share... Thanks Perry
92xj
I have not hunting in Wy for turkeys, but another option for you, depening on what you are lacking for your grand slam, washington holds 3 of the 4, for the slam. Easterns, Rios, and Merriams with the Rios and Merriams being the most populated and scattered all over tons of public land with insanely high success rates. Rhino
Never hunting Wyoming for Merriams but I have hunted the very northern end of New Mexico. I went in late April and both times I had to deal with some snow. Worse the 2nd time (snow & heavy fog) than the 1st (just snow the day before we started hunting). The 1st hunt my buddy and I killed our 2 bird limit with no problem. The 2nd hunt was another thing. We only had 1 decent day to hunt out of 3 thanks to the weather. 1st time I ever experienced lightening & thunder with heavy snowfall! I killed 1 bird on that good day and out of the 4 of us that went, only 3 birds were killed. From what I was told snow isn't usually a problem there but you'll be further north so consider that. Having to deal with snow will probably limit your access to some areas to hunt, especially if your hunting private land. Landowners don't like their roads getting torn up that time of year. An outfitter won't risk that on their leased land. As far as the hunting goes I always prefer to hunt birds that haven't been called to yet...so I took the risk with the weather. pointing_dogs_rule
Been there twice. You can not predict the weather. It can snow at anytime, even May. If snow then hunt low and around the hay bales and feedlots, if sunny they will most likely be scattered. Since you already have a place to hunt, a good place to start would be the landowner. Good luck and have lots of fun. good luck to all the dog
