Newarcher
Well, I guess you can consider me another victim of corporate greed. I'm on vacation out of State this week and was called Tuesday and told that I no longer have a job, me and about 30% of our workforce. A company bought us and has done such a terrible job at managing our business that we've had six rounds of layoffs in two years. Not because of the economy, this is corporate greed and arrogance. We sell insurance software and it's highly customized. By line of business, policy, state, company, etc. etc. etc. Well this bully company bought us and decided that they were now going to dictate to the insurance companies (our customers) that they would now receive hardware and software together and that the software would be cookie cutter, the same for each customer. They refuse to even customize anything for the client so if the shoe doesn't fit, the customer is told to deal with it or go elsewhere. The customers have told them to go spit. So now instead of firing the management, they fire the workers. The thing that gripes my hide is that we have these quarterly update meetings and they, like Enron, kept telling us that everything was great and that we were selling faster than we can develop. Lies to keep people around. I think I already have a job lined up. I had an interview set up within 8 hours of being laid off and they have already asked me to fill out the background search application and work application. For that all to happen in 24 hours of losing a professional level job is not too shabby, especially in this economy. In fact on Wednesday they had another meeting where they told people that we had a great quarter and everything was great--after laying off 30% of the employees. For the record, this is twice this same thing has happened to me while on vacation. Twice. Neither time was it anything to do with my performance. I hate corporate America. Really truly hate it. ruttinbuc
Yes, New, You have to love the way corporate America does things. There was talk of expansion and overtime when 180 of us got the axe. I am sure you will land on your feet. Good luck with the new offer.

Newarcher
Thanks guys. We're finally back from vacation and I have been able to get back to routine. Glad to be home and away from sun, sunscreen and sand for a while. A week just about does it for me. I'd like to try a month at the beach so I could have time to read some books I want to read, nap, walk on the beach and fish. The problem with vacations is that I have trouble figuring out what to do and when. Being unemployed at the beach, makes you feel like Jimmy Buffett. Being unemployed at home in Atlanta makes you a local ! I'm really praying this opportunity works out. It would be with a company I already worked for, a boss I already worked for, with people I know (some anyway), and doing a job I have already done. In the scheme of things it is the least stressful way to do things. Please pray hard on Wednesday, thanks in advance! New

Newarcher
Yeah, it will work out. This company didn't make me, this company will not break me. It's given me a wonderful teaching moment for my kids about starting their own businesses right out of college and never working for someone who can take their livelihoods away. If my Tax and Accounting business was off the ground better, I would just go with it. It is a few years away from self-sustaining. The biggest issue is what to do with the kids. My wife went back to work full-time and neither of our parents are capable of taking care of them during the summer or getting them back and forth to school. Something will work out. stevebeilgard
great attitude, new. good luck on wednesday. corporate incopetence is rampant in the world today. it's also not unusual to blame the workers as it's the incopetent management making the dicisions to do so. Newarcher
Hey guys, very sorry I thought that I had updated this post. I interviewed on Wednesday and did not get the job that I applied for. No, they actually upgraded the job so that not only would I not have to take a pay cut, I will now be making 25% more than what I was. I will also be back in Finance where I belong, the IT diversion was a nice thing but not where I needed to be. So I will get to bank a large portion of the severance which the government doesn't confiscate and end up making more. We still have the issues with the kids but will figure something out. Thanks for the support fellas. New
