Deer Contest Sign Up?

Always have 2 or 3 really active members per team and then 2 or 3 that just post occasionally.

Seems to be the case more often than not, and seems we continue to have those who for whatever reason don't participate after things get going. Understand about spending as much time in the woods as you can once season gets going, but it kinda takes away from the fun of the contest when there are only 1 or 2 members on a team posting. Al's idea of 8 teams with more members per team is probably a good idea.

I've been on several really fun (i.e. chatty) teams and a couple of boring ones. The fun teams make it all worthwhile for me. I totally enjoy following the other team members' seasons, especially the ones that get to hunt a lot. I also find it interesting to hear about the different styles and techniques of hunting that go on in different parts of the country. And hopefully my teammates don't find me too boring.

And I'll 2nd the idea of NO PRIZES for winning. That's not why I play and I'm not interested in attracting the types of people who think they need some sort of prize.

My words exactly!! Great Post!!

It is my hope that the contest will continue. It has allowed me meet people, make new friends, and be part of a "hunting camp" atmosphere on-line.

It is of my opinion that many of our members use the contest as an excuse to check in on the forums from August till December. It will be very quiet here if the contest were cancelled.

WOW!!! Didn't realize so many felt the same as I did. Like most of you I've been on some chatty teams but more that had teammates that didn't check in much at all. Part of the enjoyment of having a team is everyone sharing their memorable experiences in the woods both good and bad. Nice to hear what works & doesn't in different parts of North America too.

Like William said, I certainly understand wanting to spend as much time in the woods as possible but...I believe there's very few, if any members here that spend more time in the woods than I do. Don't take that wrong, I'm not bragging or anything like that. I simply don't have to work hardly at all anymore so I spend as much time as I can enjoying the fall/winter sunrises and sunsets. When I'm staying at our hunting camp I don't have access to internet & cell phone service sucks. It's that way in rural Kansas where I make my DIY hunts too. I still made the time to check in with my teammates and read what was going on with them when I returned. If I can do it, I have a hard time understanding why they can't...unless there in it for something else.

since participation is an issue why not make a rule that every team member must post at least once per week?

I couldn't comply with that every week. Where I hunt in KS there's no internet service at the hotel I stay at & cell phone service is poor at best. That would be a 9 to 10 day stretch that I couldn't report in. There's no internet access at our camp here in MS either. I usually take off and hunt the 1st week or so of bow season and from Dec. 26th through anywhere from the 3rd to 6th of January.

I don't think the once a week rule would work either. As you stated Al, those that will be traveling to hunt will not have computer access in some of the places they go. I could possibly swing it in Colorado, but more than likely won't be able to. If anything, I'll text a few people here on the forums while I'm in the field as I don't have cell service at camp.

The Mods sure are keeping quiet on this......... :shifty:

I don't agree with the once a week rule either. Participation is low (at least on a couple of the team I have been on) and I find it sad that we need to even think about putting in a rule that requires people to participate. I would be fine with not having a contest, I think people (especially the new members who join and run up there post count to get in) are entering it for the wrong reasons. This is why for the past 3 years or so there hasn't been any prizes. Add to that the little situation last year, and I can see why no one has stepped up to run it this year. Rules are rules and in the situations that arose last year, they clearly weren't followed, and when the rules were enforced, all heck broke loose.

I think it has just become to much of a headache for those who have ran it in the past.

Yep...I missed something. I sure didn't know about that. Just goes to show you...sometimes it's better to be an indian than a chief!

the potential for me to win best deer of the contest is pretty low based on where i can hunt this coming season. prizes are always cool and would get more people involved, but i really wouldn't say it's a must have part of the contest. i don't care i'm in it anyway for the reasons of meeting other members and hearin the stories.

i do have a good plan this season though. i'm going to stalk up to every little racked dumb buck i can find while they're sleeping and pitch bags of Miracle Grow at their heads! Then I'll have 30 pointers for my whole team!
