Your thoughts...best turkey mount?

I am considering mounting a turkey this year, if I get one. I am considering the strutting gobbler on roost. Wondering what mounts people like the best?

Also, which head type is better? The freeze dried, the pickled (formaldehyde), or artificial? I have heard about mites getting in the freeze dried heads within about 5 years or so and rotting them out.

I've got the grand slam mounted. One strutting, one flying, one gobblin, one standing alert. I like the standing alert one the best, so majestic and noble looking, plus takes up less room. As far as freeze dried head, all of mine are, you can still see the hairs on their heads, I haven't had any problem with decay of anything. Still look just like the day I got em from the taxidermst some 12 years ago.

I only have two full mounts...one flying and one gobbling on the roost. I like both, but I like the gobbling on the roost better. I have some close up pics....but don't know where they are? You can see him in this pic. but not real well. I'll snap a few of both birds and try to post them up.

Re: Your thoughts...best turkey mount?

best one i've seen was a full strutt, while gobbling, with one foot raised and curled like he was taking a step, which drew attention to his spurs, ...Swartz in st.louis did the mount....world class craftsmanship there.

NICE HOUSE SNAPPER Dang Snapper, you live in the same town as my sister. Wish I'd known and I'd stopped by on my hog this past fall.

Re: Your thoughts...best turkey mount?

I had my Rio done in a Gobbling on a limb mount. That's my bird on the left, along with two good friends of mine that were picking up their mounts as well that day from the Taxidermist. This was my very first turkey mount. I intend to have the slam mounted, each in different poses.

Re: Your thoughts...best turkey mount?

Maytom- One of the best turkey mounts I have seen. Like how he ruffled the feathers on the neck....looks like a live bird!

I would be scared of a strutting mount. I have seen maybe 1 or 2 mounts that look like real birds. None of the ones I see ever have the feathers fluffed up enough, IMO. Just doesn't look like a real bird to me. Now, I'm not bashing your buddy's bird maytom, but you see how the feathers right behind the head are not ruffled up all the way?? that's what I'm getting at. I have see somet that have the tail in full strut, and then hardly any body feather ruffled up at all.....that's why I would be scrared of a strutting mount, unless you have seen your taxi's strutting mounts and really like them.

For what it's worth................... crazy.gif

The roosted birds or flying are definitely easier to find space for, most of the time.

I would maybe agree with the roosted mount...but flying? I used to thing the same thing until I had one mounted this way. It fits nicely in the new house...but not so well in the old house with lower ceilings! shocked.gif

This mount sticks out at least 3 feet from the wall...3 feet down from top of wing tip...and 3 feet from tip of beak to tail. grin.gif

Re: Your thoughts...best turkey mount?

To me it really depends on the subspecies of the bird. I have a flying mount of a Merriam turkey because it shows off his color better. I have a strutting gobbler on the roost mount in a gobbling pose of an Eastern. The main reason I mounted those 2 birds was because of what they put me through to kill them. A memorial to some special turkey hunting memories. Those are the only 2 turkeys I've mounted and it would have to be something exceptional for me to mount another one. They sure take up a lot of room and they will burn you at the hip.
