Strut10
I've heard of a few (very few) folks reporting poult sightings in our area. Lil Strut saw the same group of 6-8 little ones twice last week. But, overall, the indications locally are of a pretty poor hatch. What's everyone else seeing?? Rhino
Been seeing them just about anytime I've been able to hit the woods. Last time was ~10 days ago. Those polts were about the size of a chicken. Our hatch is ~6 weeks ahead of yours in PA though. I saw the 1st ones this year near the beginning of May. They were about the size of a quail and they took flight.
dbHunterNY
post a thread about this a short while ago... i've seen a few groups with hens now. there was a lot in each group too. hoping the survival rate is high and will maybe help out the season within the next few years. wtnhunt
Pretty regularly seeing 4 hens with about 12-16 little ones. Got a couple hens we are seeing out front that I have yet to see any little ones with, they may have nested in the bottom. Looks like a pretty poor rate to make it this year in these parts. Hear that the flooding does not help, sure some nests in the bottoms got washed away. Pics were from about 2 weeks ago.
Strut10
Nice pics. Dad told me last night he saw 2 hens with 5 poults in his front yard..........two different age classes. One set were grouse-sized. The others were about 1/2 - 2/3 that big. I'm anxious to see what pans out with more poult sightings around here. We had a horribly wet spring. Probably one of the wettest on record. That ain't good for little turkeys.
Rhino
Nice pics William We had a horribly wet spring. Probably one of the wettest on record. That ain't good for little turkeys. Just the opposite here Don...driest spring I can remember. Should be real good for polts but some of the summer plots we planted back in April dried up and died. The plots that survived don't look very sporty either.
Ethan Givan
Been seeing some. Seen a couple hens with about 10-12 poults that were quail size or a little larger. Not seeing as many as I normally do, and Im seeing several hens out and about without any poults with them at all. That worries me and has me thinking we didnt have a great hatch this year. We had alot of rain and cool weather at the wrong time this spring. We have had really good hatches the last 3 or 4 years in a row, so Im hoping that means we wont see much of an impact by this years hatch. WHISKEYSWAMP
saw three hens with about a dozen with them last night... good to see given how wet the spring was.
shickoff
Poults here in the Northeast are pheasant-sized or chukar-sized, depending. Some late nesting too (as of the last week of June).
wtnhunt
Seems real late here, but had a hen with about 7 or 8 smaller than quail sized little ones here on Monday morning run across the driveway as I was leaving. They were smaller than the ones in the pics I posted. Had noticed two hens hanging out in the pasture around my pole barn through late June into the beginning of July without any little ones and kinda assumed they lost them with the spring flooding, they must have just not had them yet. Don't remember seeing poults that small this late here in the past, maybe a better hatch this year after all.
blackranny
Having a good hatch here in Virginia. Got 2 hens at work with 14 between them. Got 2 in backyard with 16 and have seen 3 hens on a farm I hunt with at least 10! Very good year for us!
