self guided elk hunt?

i have all ways wanted to go on a elk hunt with my dad but i dont have 5 grand , so i was wondering if i could just do it myself. so i was wondering how much out of state tags are.

Yes you can do a DIY hunt pretty cheap. I think a non res bull tag is 594 and cow is 294 or something near them prices. COlorado DOW site has all the info. Heres a link:

Non-res cow elk is up to $354, bull or either sex tag is $554.

My dad is going to attempt to get an OTC cow elk this year as he didn't draw a mulie tag. He will be doing a DIY hunt.

The only problem with an unguided hunt is that you need to do the work yourself which mostly means you have to contact a packer to get your elk out or get into good enough shape to do it yourself. Knowing how to stay alive in the high country can be challenging at times too. Do your homework. Prepare well.

When I was young my dad kept telling me we'd go, we never did, until last year. We went for the first time last year with a bow, either sex OTC elk tag. I was on a GOOD bull, only 2 miles off the road! We ended up going back the last weekend, and I nailed a cow, I had two opportunities at shooting an elk, and well, the second one I scored. It was awesome, and we plan on going back for a long time, as long as they sell OTC tags.
