I need a new TV

I need everyones help. My faithful American made Zenith finally went up last night in smoke. :( It made a whining noise then smoke rolled out from inside.

The last time I went shopping for a TV there were no such thing as a flat screen. I have no idea what I'm shopping for. What is a good brand to look at and what store offers the best deals?

Unless you throw out a lot of money they all seem to be pretty close in quality. You can upgrade but its going to cost you. From what ive read Vizio has a decent tv. Make sure you stay away from Emerson. I bought a 32" and it lasted less than a year and was going to cost $200 to fix.

I noticed our local walmart has a 55" Phillips on sale for something like $884. It is 1080P, 120mhz.

Make sure you get the full 1080p. It makes a HUGE difference. My new tv is also 240mhz and it has a lot better picture than the 120mhz models. Still, unless youre going to compare quality the 120mhz model is likely going to have a better picture than what youre use to.

The quality at first (unless youre using the local HD signal) will look awful. The first time I bought the flatscreen HD I saw the picture and was really disappointed. Come to find out if the broadcast isnt in HD you can really spot the difference in quality and it looks rough on an HD tv. If you play a blueray or get an HD signal the quality difference is incredible!

Good luck and let us know what youget...

I'd steer clear of the Vizio brand. We had a 42" Vizio that bit the dust just under the 2 year mark. Customer service wasn't that great either. We since have bought a 42" LG (LCD 1080p 120hz) and like it so far. I would also urge you to get the LED or LCD and not a plazma. Plazmas run hotter and the glare on the screen is noticably worse than a LED or LCD.

Our newest vizio,22", is an LED. It's awesome. I recommend LED even over LCD if your willing to spend a little Extra

I have a 50" sane plasma in the living room and am going on my fourth year with it. I had not had the first problem out of it and the picture is as good as the day I bought it. Got it at wal mart and gave like 1400$ for it,I think they have them for around 800$ now. I bought a sanyo LCD for my bedroom that's like 36" and like it also. As mentioned above, the plasma puts off a great amount of heat and I think I read some where that they use alot more electricity than the LCD do.

I would buy a philips again in a heartbeat. Was about 3 years ago I think I posted asking similar question. We bought our 42 inch philips from sams club, was about $100 cheaper than anywhere else for that same model including wal mart online. At the time we bought ours there were not too many 120 hz models out, most were 60 hz. We went with the 120 hz model philips, it had a better picture than the comparable higher priced jvc and sony models.

My wife has her eye on a Insignia – 32” Class/720p/60Hz/LCD HDTV (best buy brand) TV

Any thoughts about this?

Pretty good brand. I bought an Insignia-37" 1080p a little over a year ago and haven't had any problems with it. Got it for a good price and it works great, Blu-ray movies show up amazing on it.

I think with most brands you are going to find some people who like it, and some people who don't. When I was looking for my TV I went out to a couple different places with a budget in mind, looked at the various pictures on the ones on display and then compared the manufacturers warranties.

I bought a Samsung 32" LCD and it is bright and clear. Dad bought a 52" Sharp LED and is very happy with it. According to the local Radio shack that we have and have bought from for many many years. The Sharp and Samsung are at the top of the LED pile right now, but they said that none of them are really bad tv's now days.

I have a 42" LG ( $700 ) , a 40 " Toshiba ( $600 ) and a 26" LG ( $380 ), they are all LCD TV's and all have great picture. I myself would stay away from any of the cheaper/no name brands that walmart sells. Stick with a good know quailty product like the ones I have listed or Sony, Panasonic etc.

I have to agree with Lewis ,, I also have the LG model in 46" and love it ,,,, :)

one thing I would re-consider on your insignia and thats the HD resolution. Spend the extra money and get 1080P....its about as big of a difference as going from digital to HD. Even cartoons look real on our 1080P tv's.

I would suggest this also, especially if you are going to be using a Blu-Ray player or something like an Xbox or Playstation 3. As for regular HD cable television all of the broadcasting networks are still using 720p as their format so it really isn't going to be much of a difference there. But Blu-ray movies are simply AMAZING on a 1080p TV. One thing you also want to consider as far as size is how big of a room the TV is going to be in and how far away the seating will be from it. This makes a big difference IMO.

No doubt the picture is great but ours didn't last even 2 years and customer service wasn't very helpful.

LED is better than LCD IMO also.

We have a 22" Insignia in the bedroom. (It's actually our one and only flat screen) We got a great deal on it from best Buy and the picture is superb. Going on two years now without any issues.
