Swamphunter
Opinions.... Is a .410 slug an effective round for deer less than 50 yards? Its illegal in NY to hunt deer with less than a 20 gauge, but I have mixed opinions about whether or not it has enough energy to kill a deer. Anyone in LEGAL states have any experiences? hungry hunter
Inside 50 yards I have killed many a hog but no deer, it drops off to much after that.
huntnfish
Looking at the ballistics I would think it would not be much good after 50 yards. If you could move up to a 20 ga due to the vast amount of choices of ammo.
brad dryden
At 50yds it will take one down. But how far would be the cut off distance im not sure.
Dawg
I agree, out to 50 yards would be lethal. When I saw the title of this thread it reminded me of my Granny. Back in the day she hunted with a .410.
MichiganHunter
I haven't shot a deer with it but my neighbor's 2 kids took their first deer with a .410 and both were shot under 50yds, and nither traveled over 40yds. I think this all goes back to shot placement. But I say YA
mikebohio
check out the dupo 7 round for the 410 and tell me what you think. i posted it in the shotgun section.
wtnhunt
Shotguns here for deer only slugs are allowed. I would have to look back on the regs, but wanting to say that the minimum here is a 20 gauge.
Shaun_300
I'm sure it would be ok < 50 yards, wouldn't be my choice though. Minimum 20 gauge here in Ontario as well.
Rhino
Under 50...OK. For the record my roommate in college told me he killed his 1st deer with a .410 slug at ~50 yards. That was way back in the 60's though. He's an old fart now...like me!
hunter109
what if you would put a fully rifled barrel on yor .410 how far would yo shoot then but 50 yards is the longest with ou one
Ultradog
Never shot one but a .410 was the first gun I ever hunted deer with. Never pulled the trigger though. Up in central MN brush country where 50 yds is a long shot My older brother shot his first deer with the same hand me down .410. I was too young to hunt then but I know that is what he killed it with.
00DodgeGuy
20 guage is minimum here in IL as well....I am assuming there is a reason for it. Here is a good read....Whitetail Deer hunting with 410 slugs
NC8point
I am sure .410 would be fine at 50 yards but I wouldn't stretch it much
