toddyboman
I think I might try and get a tab too....Either Ipad or some other type. Yeah it is a bit more money but you can do SO MUCH MORE with them. All that said my dad has a nook and he seems to like it......

Leo
If you are going to read outside or for hours, the Kindle wins hands down. Yes it's only black and white but that screen is "electronic paper" and that has several advantages over LCD screens. You can easily read it in direct sunlight. It causes far less eye strain than LCD screens and the "electronic paper" screen is very efficient with batteries. My Kindle goes almost two weeks in between charges after reading it everyday a few hours or so. I've read over 20 books on my Kindle. I bought it to read books and that's all I need it for. MCH
I've got both an Ipad and a Kindle. For reading books only, the Kindle wins hands down. I normally read before I go to bed at night and with the Ipad being so bright, it hurts my eyes. For overall functionality, the Ipad wins. We play all kinds of apps and access the internet. tedicast
I just bought my wife a Nook Simple Touch. She played with the original Nook, and the Nook color, and she liked the contrast on the simple touch better then the other nooks. I was pretty impressed with the Nook. Her biggest problem with the Kindle was that it read only one format, and the Nook read multiple formats. She didn't want it to go online as she has a phone for that, and the data package for the I-pad put it out of our price range. So we went with the Nook Simple Touch...It is a nice size, fits in her purse, and it is easier to read for me then most paperbacks.

Actually the Kindle reads several formats and amazon will convert many other formats to Kindle readable by simply emailing the file to the device. I've done this many times with .html and .prc files. A short description on how to do this is here. Amazon.com Help: Reading Personal Documents on Kindle (1st Generation)
NBomb500
Heard good things about both. I think the kindle slightly edges out the Nook though!
Alisha
Never had my hands on the Nook, but I own a Kindle and absolutely LOVE it. There is no glare when reading outside or anything. Very simple to operate.
