Jorden
Does this deer have poor genetics and needs to be removed from the herd or is he just young? What do you guys think?
victor3ranger
I would give him one more year.
wtnhunt
Looks like a 3.5 year old to me Jordan. All he looks to be lacking is tine length. Mass looks like it should be average for his age. He has decent spread, beam length, and has at least 4 points to a side. Guess whether or not I would take him where you are at would depend on what else I knew was around, but he would likely be a shooter here anyway based on that he is at least 3.5 and meets the other criteria I typically look for when deciding. jbeck
you need bag tagged if you kill that young deer!!!! Yep don't shoot that deer, but I would say he isn't going to get much better. I hate to do it but I'll come up and take him out for you, I would hate for you to burn a tag on a buck that small. I on the other hand have a story already built for how there were 2 buck together and I thought I was shooting the bigger one, then I'll scrape the dirt a little with my boot and say well he's a good managment buck. just PM me and I can get up there this fall. wtnhunt
you need bag tagged if you kill that young deer!!!! Looking at the body, think it is a 3.5 year old deer. Bag tagged, really? A lot of places around the country any 3.5 year old deer is a trophy(regardless of antler size) and a lot of hunters would be happy to see or kill a 3.5 year old. I would give him one more year. Given where you are Jorden and the chances the deer would make it I might do so as well. He could grow quite a bit in a year.
Texan_Til_I_Die
I don't see anything obviously wrong with that deer, unless all of the other bucks in his cohort (age class) are noticeably bigger. What do they look like? BTW - What do you think the deer's age is? Edited August 23, 2011 by Texan_Til_I_Die
rhine16
One more year, and that deer is likely a stud!

Texan_Til_I_Die
You have to remember this is Wisc. That is a 2.5 year old buck up there. That's exactly what I was getting at. Does the OP think he's looking at a mature buck? I don't think that deer is anywhere close to mature yet. Now some of the intensive trophy management plans will call for removing X number of bucks every year, and if this buck is the runt of his age class, then he might be a candidate for removal. But in 99% of circumstances you'd probably want to let that buck walk unless you're strictly meat hunting. In that case, I'm sure he'd be plenty tasty. I really think that buck is 2.5 years old and has the chance to be a giant! Those front legs are darn near 2x the depth of his chest. If you take off his rack he's wouldn't be judged as old. wtnhunt
You have to remember this is Wisc. That is a 2.5 year old buck up there. Yep, Wisconsin. Also have to remember this pic is from beginning of August and not from October or November. If you take off his rack he's wouldn't be judged as old. Dunno about that, just my opinion but think the rack in the pics with this particular deer may make that deer be judged younger. Deer has a pretty square body, does not look thinned down in the back end, girth in the hind end is as thick as the chest at the shoulders. Usually 2.5 year olds will not be quite as square in the body.
TN Bucknasty
Here in the big TN, he'd not only get whacked, but he'd have a prominent place on someone's wall. In Wisconsin, however, I'd personally give him another year. Here, my rule is 3.5 years old= shooter regardless of headgear, but you are lucky to see one 3.5 here. It might happen a couple times in a year if you hunt really, really hard.
abrown
I use the KISS method of aging! LOL If you kill him now, you'll never know what he could have been. If you let him live, and he gets bigger, you might want to give him more time. Personally, I'd say atleast 1 if not 2. If he is just 2.5 or 3.5, wait till 5.5 or 6.5 for them to reach their full potential. Genetics no doubt plays a role, but letting them age plays more of a role.
