Saved a life last night

Well, workin midnights.. I'm definitely getting exposed to all kinds of things..

We had a motorcycle accident last night with massive head trauma and our ambulance was heading back into town from another call. We had to stop the bleeding and try to somewhat stabilize this guy who was combative with us. Definitely a scary experience... But I heard before I left work that he is in stable condition and they are expecting him to make a full recovery. Hopefully it stays that way.

God was looking out for him tonight.

Not easy to see that stuff. Head trauma will cause a patient to become combative......FYI. He likely was not intentionally combative toward you.

It is nice to see law enforcement rendering medical aid. That is not the norm. Good Job Buddy!!

Tracy,

Thanks for that info.. I thought that was the case but wasn't 100% sure. The reason we had to provide medical aid for so long was because our in-town ambulance was on another call and told not to stop.. not sure what that was all about. The other ambulance was 10-15 out, so we had to do what we could to help this guy.

Definitely something I will remember for a long time.

Diabetics can present the same way. They can be combative from low blood sugar, that is until they go unconscious!!

As far as the ambulance not stopping while on another call, that gets dicey. They are legally obligated to their current patient and could be charged with abandonment if they delayed care. Of course many unknown factors come into play here though so it would be hard to know for sure.

My biggest question is why they wouldn't call for mutual aid from the next closest ambulance service? Seems like a no-brainer to me. Making a person wait for care until their ambulance clears the current call they are on is a very bad thing with many, many potential consequences.
