Long night into morning

Irene blew through here and left a lot of water. I woke up to hard rain against the window. Looking out I saw the tops of the trees thrashing and the creek behind my place on the rise. I got dressed and went up the street for a coffee and the Sunday paper. I knew it was going to be a long morning. I emptied my shed of anything that might get messed up by water, hooked up the boat and took it out of nature's wrath.

I spent the rest of the morning steering the water away with whatever I could find. An old carpet, a plastic poncho and bags of sand kept the water away. My homemade bag targets were put to emergency use and proved to be most useful. 4x4 border ties helped stream the water away as did concrete parking lot stops. A few pallets from the company across the street came into play, as well.

Here is the view from here. I realized i never did get a shot of my handy work. I think i have it on video.....

That is some crazy stuff there Mike. Glad it didn't hurt ya too much. Jersey got hammered like Long Island did.

We got flooded here in the house also. Water was flowing in from the foundation and going from one side of the basement to the other. It could have been worse. Nothing money can't replace.

Hang in there, the winds are supposed to come. With that come loss of power. Good Luck to ya.

Thanks guys. The rain stopped and the water started receding pretty quick. The wind scares me some with these big trees. Their bank side roots are, no doubt, more exposed after this flooding.

My brother had it worse than me at his place. He said the downhill rush of the little stream by his place took out his bridge between the house and the barn and left his acre and a half looking like a tsunami went through. The township failed to fix a bad situation up the road that allowed the overblown stream. And like you Anthony, he and my SIL were up all night pumping out the basement. I am going to head up there in a bit to see if I can do anything for him. I should see if I can find him a lawyer.

Here are the pictures from the video.

Thanks fellas! I am no worse for wear, but a little sore. I can only say things could have been a lot harder had the storm turned into the monster it could have. Very thankful for the warnings.

This state took a heck of a hit with all the flooding and it might be awhile before it is back to normal. All the big rivers are going to crest above flood stage between tomorrow and Tuesday.

Stay out of trouble up there, Luke. There is still a lot of fight in Irene!

Glad you guys are ok down there, I was thinking of you! Looks like it left a lot of destruction behind. We got hit with some 30-40mph wind gusts, that's about it. I know Montreal, Quebec got nailed with a crap load of rain and 75mph winds, thats not even 2 hours away from me, we were right on the edge of it.

at work now. power was out earlier from some repairs. there was a land/mud slide 15 minutes from my house and took out a couple houses. a handful of bridges are gone. in bennington VT someones car was floating down the river. my old college roomate is getting married come Oct and the place they've booked is under water i heard. lots of flooded houses and lake front camps around here in different areas. cousin's barn yard and milking parlor was flooded until they pumped it out. i'm relatively high up so i had no issues. driveway just washed out a little, but i'll get out my tractor and fix it. i have my 10kW generator, but it never needed to kick on at my house. I'm not sure my ground blind is still in my food plot though. behind the house i own a creek bottom which a few little brooks converge into a small creek that runs along the food plot. the whole woods getting there was flooded and down stream my creek bottom deepens a lot. all that water funneling through an 8' wide and deep creek bed makes for some fast raging rapids. i've got videos posted on facebook for those of you on there.

the main twin bridges crossing the hudson river on the I-87 (northway) leading up north from Albany, NY just had a runaway barge with 30ft crane heading toward it and other bridges down river. somehow the barge was stopped but they closed all the bridges crossing the river, for fear it'd take them out with traffic on them. i work on west side of the river and live on the east side, so i'm glad it was stopped.

also, a main highway leading through the town i live in was flooded. in that spot where my uncle lives (he's higher up) there's swamp land on either side of the highway. it flooded to the point where some thought they'd ride a jetski in it... Things are getting better everyday, Lewis. the Delaware flooded , but not as bad as first predicted. A lot of towns in NJ are still underwater. A lot of people still without power. We were lucky in that regard.

db, I am truly amazed at the damage in Vermont and New York. Those images and video are pretty incredible. You really have to feel for those people cut off from the rest of the state.

A lot of people called this a non event....morons!
