Interesting eve hunt;

We sell deer corn here and had customers coming in picking up large orders Thurs. So I had one party left for the day, and had his two pallets up front at the door (80 50# bags). It was 4;30 pm and time to go bowhunting ...cutoff point..I check my phone messages, and figure he's a no show, but if he comes we have the "honor system" here with a posted sign on front barn door telling them to load their own bags, leave $$ in lock box. Pretty simple.

At 5;50 PRIME TIME...here comes my wife Kim down the main woods road with the truck honking...deer were just coming in and of course they blow out. i get back out to road as she comes back after turning around. Im informed two suctomers...omg..thats funny!..(lol that is a mis-spelled word, but Im leaving it as it is..Haaa)... are waiting to be loaded and have been there for almost an hour waiting!! Well I figure they must be a customer that has an order in the back that I have ready and cant get at it until I move the order up front, plus there was no body scheduled other than the MI. guy...OR he was elderly and could not lift bags...

I pack up head for the barn...I get there and we have two mid 40 guys standing there....

I blow my cork..but manage to keep it too some steam coming out..I said are you( insert his name)..??

He says" yes Im here to pick up my corn but the skid steer has it on the pallets"!!

I said "come here buddy"!!! What does this say on the door"??, pointing to my sign...."Oh I didnt see that"...

they could have backed up and been loaded and half way home...NO!! they would rather stand around and wait for the skid steer to lift the bags up to bed level...

let me tell you...two of MI finest right there!!

I apologized to them for being a little (P-od)..they said they didnt blame me, because my hunt was screwed up...we shook hands and they went on their way...I told Kim I didnt blame her, but I had hoped she would have took stock in the situation and went out and looked what was the deal...anybody would have said..whats the problem? back up and load em up!!

Dealing with the public is interesting indeed!

Ouch. Check the cam to see if a big ol buck came in just after you got out of the stand. That would top the cake.

Yeah, That'd piss me off as well. I'd go back there this evening see if anything comes out.

I plan on doing just that Andy....the wind was perfect for my set too...oh well, it's one of those things where you just shake your head and wonder why you even bother to put up with it...and I have everything right on the front door.....GO FIGURE!!..and whats worse are the ones who come out without calling...my answering machine tells you exactly whats going on and is updated daily....no need for a wasted trip...

The rut is full swing here in Wisconsin. The last relatively mature buck I saw was this past Thursday and he came out with a doe guarding her with his life. Every other young buck in the little secluded alfalfa field I was hunting went right to them. If she got more than 20 yards away from him, the other bucks would try to run her off. He spent all evening fending them off while she fed. When she moved, he moved. He didn't harrass her, but followed her off the field towards the end. Now I am hard pressed to see a buck, only 25-35 does and fawns per evening. This is besides the other crop fields within a half mile. By the time the late Dec. antlerless hunt starts (I don't have permission to hunt during the regular firearm season), the deer will be totally nocturnal and moved on to a different food source. Most of the corn is off and already chisled down. Too many deer = small fawns and scrubby, undernurished bucks.

For those who save their vacation until this coming two weeks, good luck. It is hard to kill a mature buck when he is in lock-down with a hot doe.

I agreed with Potash RSL about the bucks being locked down....... Until 45 minutes ago. I took a nap and woke up at 4 PM (the old 5 PM). I was being lazy and did not want to go out, however, the wind direction changed to the west. I quickly threw on my camo and went to the only stand that I could get to quickly... the stand behind my house. This is a so-so stand, however, it's easy to get to and gets me out of the house. At 400 yards I see and buck come out of the woods (4:15 PM). Hard to tell what he is but I rattle. No sign of him until 20 minutes laters when I see him below my house at 250 yards away (with 3 does). Locked-up with does...shoot!. I rattle and he disappears, still not knowing how big he is. I look through my binos where I had last seen him and all of a sudden he appears, as big as life in my binos at 70 yards... holy crap!!! He is headed my way and the rattling has worked. He goes into a small thicket at 60 yards and comes out at 25 yards (branches in the way and no clear shot). He then stops at 25 yards quartering away and I look him over..... is he big enough to shoot????? I am not totally comfortable with the shot and pass. He walks behind my stand and works a scrape. I use "the can" twice and get no response. I grab for my grunt tube and give it a blow. His head instantly goes up and he looks at me at 20 yards. I give another grunt and he comes right in from behind my tree and gives me an 8 yard, broadside shot (my stand is 30 feet above the ground). ONE PROBLEM!!!!! While pulling my bow up the tree my 20 yard fiber optic has come out of the pin...... I only have a 30 and 40 yard pin. Shoot!!!! My pins are fairly close so I place the 30 yard pin on the bottom of his chest and shoot. The arrow finds it's mark and he drops like a rock (spine shot). A second arrow finishes him off. Dead 7 yards from the tree.I got down expecting to se a medium sized 8 point that had reached his prime and he was bigger then I expected (no ground shrinkage). Glad that I didn't pass on this guy. Nice brow times, nice bladed tines, good mass and nice tine length. Lots of what I call character. 9 points total. I have one more tag a will try and upgrade.Photos will be up by Monday AM.good luck to allthe doggood luck to allthe dog

I had a great last couple of days, Last saturday I shot a 4 pointer and a doe within 20 min. of each other. The last night shot I shot a doe and a nice 6 pointer. I found the doe but my blood trail for the buck didnt look good but I did see him stumble in the feild a couple of times so I decided to let him lay over night and not push him. Got up this morning and got on the blood trail but rain had washed away most of the trail. I found him piled up from where I stopped last night only 80 yards further! To my dismay coyotees had found him first and ate out his shoulder, neck and night. But I did recover him!

Congratulations. Still not seeing a lot of bucks in the field or on cams, but there's tons of food right now and we're weeks away from the rut. Hope to get in the stand a little this weekend. Stupid doe-only primitive weapon season here right now, but doesn't affect me cuz I'm still bowhunting. They really got the seasons screwed up down here in last few years.

Had a buck at 150 yards last night. It was tough to tell what he was in the picked cornfield. He did not respond to rattling or grunts. He looked to have 8 inch tines and be a ten point. Once he got into the alfalfa field I looked at him once more with the binos. Low and behold he looked away from me show me his 21 inch spread!!! I will try that area this weekend and this coming week. I would shoot him.

good luck to all

the dog
