Congratulations on the doe Ruth! Hope to see some pics soon. Say, do you still have that set of "lucky bibs"? Maybe you should wear them to bring in that big buck?

Tomorrow's wind direction is just too iffy for my area - wnw. But Saturday will be perfect! High 20's to low 40's wind out of the sse to s at 4-7mph. This is perfect rutting weather and I have the perfect stand location for buck movement - can't wait!

While I have your attention NYers... anyone interested in a late season doe hunt in 8H (just south of Rochester)? As it stands right now I have 4 doe tags (mine plus assuming my daughter's who is not hunting this year). 8H has extra doe permits up for "sale" on Nov 1st. I can get two more off my license for sure, and if I drag my daughter out after school, get another two. Anyway, if the interest is there I can pick up extra tags at no cost and have a little get together on a 1k-acre piece where I have permission to be.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. The deer are in full rut now here in NY. Was blood trailing and had a doe & 2 small bucks in hard chase around me for 30 minutes. They all passed 10 yds away while I was on the ground... shot my deer at 9:35 but didn't find it until 6:00 - had to finish it off - my original shot was very poor to my suprise. Story and photos later after I get some sleep and a little work done.

Way to go Art and Ruth! Went out on Oct. 24th to a public ground special draw area for 1 week only and saw about 40 deer - 38 does, 1 button buck and what could be the biggest buck (10 point) I've ever seen. Came out 150 yards away with a bunch of does. Didn't respond to my calls. Wednesday I had World Series tickets (Go Cards!), but since it was rained out early I went back and cut some corn stalks and made a quick ground blind where that monster came from on Monday. Just like on Monday here all the does come first (several busted me once they got down wind) most just stayed in the open field. Then at last light here he comes! Doh! different buck, about a 130 inch 3.5 year old 8 point at 20 yards looking right at me. Decision time. I decided to wait for the 10. After 10 minutes no 10 point, and the 8 is still there! I decide to take him as light fades. Just as I pull the does see me and blow! The 8 point turns and starts to leave - as he leaves I shoot! Looked for him all night - never found him since it was raining and no blood trail. That's most likely what I would have said, but as an expereinced hunter I opted not to shoot the fast walking buck as he left. There will be another - if not this year, then next.

This was one of those magical days in the woods during late October. Conditions were perfect, favorable light wind, cloudy, and cold. Sitting in my stand an hour before sunrise, two deer passed on a trail separating standing corn and the woodlot. A few minutes before sunrise a fox traversed a cut corn field to the west. I always have good luck when I see a fox. Unfortunately there was no immediate action. The bow season would soon be ending, and I had not seen much activity, and what was around was off in the distance. At 9:35 I decided to try my grunt call figuring not trying it was not working.

I did not even finish my series of grunts when the deer came running in to the call. Now standing at 7 yds behind a large tree I decided it was time. When his nose appeared on the opposite side of the tree I drew. He stopped perfectly broadside 7 yds. Release... and Thwack!

He took off into the cut corn about 30 yds, then turned left at the light and ran another 200 + yds before going out of view. This was not good. After an hour wait I began training, but saw NO sign. After searching the entire cut corn field and two drainage ditches I figured my deer bedded down in a patch of greenbrier and blowdowns. I spent another hour searching that area and found nothing.

Discouraged, I started walking uphill in the hardwoods where another series of blowdowns waited. At the blowdown edge, I was harrased by a sea of squirrels and used my last arrow to harvest one at 10 yds. After dressing him out it was time for a break.

This is when the fun started. I heard the unmistakable sound of a buck grunt! For the next 30 minutes two bucks chased a doe big time! They came as close as 5 yds away - I could smell them. Eventually they left in the direction of the cut corn, so I figured on sitting on that edge of woods with the blowdowns and greenbriars.

No action, but did spot a few deer - and they spotted me. I'm thinking "day over" now as it was beginning to get dark. Totally discouraged with my head down I began the 1/2 mile walk back to the truck. And then right in front of me... blood! And then some more blood. This had to be my deer. Through greenbriar and blowdown he did go. It was so thick I could not follow the trail, so I walked around the blowdown. Seeing no more sign, I started looking around me - and there he was, bedded down and starring back at me.

Pretending not to notice, I nocked an arrow, worked into position, and let 'em have it at 5 yds. He bolted up, ran about 30 yds and piled up - it was now about 6:00 pm. My story was not over yet.

I got my deer to the woods edge and figured on driving the truck back to pick him up. I made it about 100yds off the road before getting stuck in the mud, and pitch black now. To make matters worse, I was stuck in a spot where the landowner had just spread hog manuer all around! Thankfully he was still home and helped pull me out. The day ended well. I had found my deer and got my 3rd squirrel with a bow.

Congrats on all the deer guys! Rifle season opens tomorrow here, unfortunately I have to work all this week but I'm off all next week! Hoping for some snow to hit the ground before the time comes, going to be like 60 degrees tomorrow though! :( Both yesterday and this morning we were around 18 degrees, hopefully it's like that all next week!

Still trying to put some numbers on the board, but with the rut being close, I've let quite a few does walk.

I have seen two bucks, one under 120 inches and the other well over, but have yet to pull the trigger.

Gator is coming down Thursday night to hunt the weekend with me....maybe we can put a big'un down!

Upgrade for Bucknrut :jaw:

Looked like a monster doe coming down the lane at 11:15 last Saturday. Made a bad shot, knew it, and waited 5 hours before coming down from my stand. I was a little suprised at what I found. I wonder if Ruth would shoot this one on the gun opener next week? Anyway, it's a legal buck since the long drop down spike is 4". The billy goat spike on the right is only 2". Never saw either one at the time. Lucky I still had a buck tag. The real bummer is that I had 2 different wall hangers within bow range earlier - just no good shots. A hot doe was the cause for all the action. Seen 12 deer by 11 am.

Have done the same thign Art! Congratulations on your upgrade. I missed a freak nasty pig a couple hours ago - right at dark. Long story, but bottom line is the buck came in to me from downwind as I was gruting at a different buck upwind of me. I never would have guessed a deer would have came in the way this one did. He came walking towards me in the bottom of a dry deep creek bed. I'm in a tree 30 feet high half way up a hill. The buck is 50 feet below me at 40 yards. He's sniffing like crazy exactly down wind of me. I think he finally got my wind and started leaving. I put my 30 yard pin on him thinking at 50 feet below me the 30 yard pin would be about right. Saw the sparks between his legs as I sacrificed my broadhead and arrow to the rock bed gods. I don't think I've ever practiced a shot 50 feet in elevation. The arrow went an inch or two low - between his legs. Pretty bummed about it, but hey - that's huntng. Just glad it was a clean miss. Gun season starts next Friday.

Oh yea, looked like a super wide and thick 8-point (maybe more- hard to tell in the near dark). I'd say 150 inches or better.

Broke down and killed a young 7 point this morning. Season has been frustrating to say the least. I've had 2 120+ bucks at 25 yards and no shots. I've seen 2 bucks over the 140 mark but both past 60.

Anyway, I had passed on the 7 point twice this season but couldn't help myself. Really enjoyed harvesting this buck.

I've got the required photos but I'm going to wait to enter him until I finish taking vacation days(3 left).

Also, congrats Art!

Hey all.. sorry I haven't been around much lately. Work, school and hunting have me tied up pretty good. But this week I'm on vacation and leaving for Virginia tomorrow morning through Friday afternoon. As many of you know, Saturday is NY's opener for gun. I'll be back in NY to hunt til Monday with the bang stick. I have a feeling we're gonna be laying down a lot of venison over the next week including a bear or two. Bucks are running does but the weather just got cool for the all day movement but it seems we're right at that lockdown period. Thank God I won't be here for it. I will keep y'all posted while I'm down there.

Good job on the deer everyone. I'm a slacker I guess but just struggling. Not sure if it's moon phase, weather or what but I'm just not seeing the deer lately. My friends are in the same boat so I don't know. I'm off this Friday and all next week so hope to make something happen then. The weather gets better starting Friday so my fingers are crossed. Our gun season starts Saturday and the dogs hit the woods too so deer will be on there feet one way or the other next week!

Congrats on the 7 Kevin!

School, work, and home football games the last two weekends have kept me out of the woods lately, but it's not far from time to get serious. Will be in stand basically from friday 18th- friday 25th with my bow. Unfortunately, the dang bangsticks get to come out Saturday. Will also be using some of that time to hang rut stands.

Just stick with it VA! It has been slow all over this year. I did not see any deer in my area until the 3rd week of archery season. The forcced movement will help.

Went out today 'cause tomorrow's winds will be 20mph +. Didn't see any deer, but I found my arrow from 2 weeks ago when I shot my monster spike. The feather fletching is all worn down and I will have to re-fletch with plastic vanes. Most importantly, I have my broadhead back. This gives me two quality broadheads and four arrows. I don't have to order either one. I have some old-tech cam-lock 3-blades I can use for squirrels and finishing shots on deer. Droped off some meat to the landowner tonight as well. They were quite happy about that. Year's past they practicly turned down my offerings, but times are tough for everyone now. Best part of the night - the corn has been cut all around. Adjacent fields have been plowed under, and my corn field is the only one with corn on the ground. Watched a chipmunk strip an entire ear of kernels and burry them nearby.

Using my last 3 days of vacation for yesterday, today and Friday.

Yesterday was supposed to be the "worst" of the three. With morning temps in the 50's while today's and tomorrow's lows were going to dip into the 30's. But I had a great sit yesterday. Saw three bucks and had a 120 class shooter buck 5 yards from my tree. Couldn't get a shot! He snuck up on me and by the time I got ready and drawn, he was directly under me. Then he proceed to walk directly away from me....tried grunting but couldn't get him to offer me a shot I felt comfortable with.

Ready to walk out the door and give these near freezing temps a try!
