abrown
Guys and Gals, I need some advice on calling in call shy elk! I've tried several things. Tried bugling, estrus calls, and just simple mews. Seems like these dang elk are smarter than an ole gobbler with hens. I'm sure he has cows with him, but just doesn't want to come all the way in, usually hangs up about 100 yrds or so. My next option is keeping the caller farther back than the shooter, but when hunting in dark timber it is hard to set up on a particular route. ANYONE have advice? wyohunter
when the bull is hung up with his cows, it might not be possible to pull him away.....at best you have to make him feel theres another bull to worry about. this might take more than just using a call, try raking a tree with a branch, shed it up, stomp around all while bugling.... but like i said, he might stay with the cows, or just move them over the next ridge too.....its hunting, not killing....good luck
abrown
I tried that last year, he just stayed on the ridge and chuckled. Oh I know that's why it's called hunting, that's why I'm a junky!
m gardner
Had the same problem all last week those big bulls just wouldn't leave the cows and I couldn't get close enough to kill them. I picked off a sattelite bull and went home happy knowing that the wife wouldn't beat me for not shooting some meat.
