gobblerroller
In the spring, we got two newborn fawns on camera. We check our cameras once a week, and have seen these deer go from a few hours old, to not having spots. One is a doe, the other is a buck. My question is, will the nub buck grow tiny spikes, or just have nubs? In the past, I've seen bucks with spikes less than an inch long, and judged them as a fawn that was born earlier in the spring, and had just enough time to grow super small spikes. Rhino
Could go either way. I've seen fawns with very short spikes before but it's very rare here with our December rut. I've seen more while hunting the midwest. Fawns all have one thing in common...they all have that puppy dog looking face.
dbHunterNY
i've followed a couple with that outcome but that's not enough to come to much of a conclusion.
wtnhunt
Most buck fawns here will have nubs, however I have seen a few over the years that had short spikes. I would assume those that grew spikes as fawns probably had been born early and had excellent nutrition.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Yep, unusual but not unheard of for a fawn (6 month old) to have tiny spikes. Most spikes are 18 months old and on their first set of antlers.
Tominator
I think for the most part, they stay "buttons." I've seen a few deer with extremely small spikes, but I couldn't tell you if they were fawns or not.
