hoosierhunter
How many guys do this, or is there something else you use other than a toothpaste for scent control?
cray8705
they have a gum out there now, I thought it was funny when i first heard about it and was skeptical, but i broke down and bought some this year. It seems to work pretty well
Jeramie
Honestly, I dont worry about my breath. I figure there are a lot of things that will get me busted long before it will. I do however brush my teeth with baking soda on occasion because it helps to whiten! I dont worry to much about my teeth but on occasion I need to knock the coffee stains out. Rhino
I use Scent-A-Way toothpaste Pat. I know there's non-believers here about Scent-Lok type stuff but for me it sure makes a difference to breath through the mask with my mouth to help filter out breath odors. Non-believers can say what they want about it but it won't change my attitude from my personal hunting experiences.
redkneck
I should use it, but just brush before I leave the house, and a couple mt. dews later I figure the scent is gone. One thing I know for sure is that my morning breath has got to go, for mine and nature's sake. Baking soda or hunter's toothpaste is no doubt in my mind a plus. dbHunterNY
haven't tried it or the gum-o-flage type of stuff out their. i brush with regular toothpaste and then usually bring an apple or two into the woods with me. i eat that and figure it's good enough without spending more money on hunting stuff. just what i do i guess. wtnhunt
Use arm and hammer baking soda toothpaste, but not straight baking soda. Did try straight baking soda a few times, but like mentioned above when you eat or drink anything afterwards it defeats the purpose.

I definitely do the same thing with my face mask and breathing, but I'm just looking to go a bit further. Those little details can be the difference between him locking up a half step short of the shooting hole or not. I think the people that don't believe in it just explain it away to "bad luck." No arguement here! I know many people don't think it's that important but when you consider the amount of air you're pumping out/minute it sure adds up to a lot of bad breath you're filling the downwind area with. Most afternoons the wind shifts around some until the last 30 minutes to an hour or so before dark too down here.

swohiodave
I brushed with Crest Complete with Scope Outlast on saturday and had an old doe and 2 button bucks go under my stand. I had also just relieved myself in the opposite direction. Never phases them unless they are sniffing the base of my tree. I have had that stop deer before but never spooked them. redkneck
To me breath has always been a common sense thing, if your ole lady can smell if you had one drink 2 hours ago (and I swear she can do it upwind from me ) then you know dang well a deer can pick you out. Al's right, you emit odor slightly always, but your pumping it through your mouth like a fan blowing.

Most afternoons the wind shifts around some until the last 30 minutes to an hour or so before dark too down here. I agree lots of scent comes from your mouth and brushing with something has to help. Here is my .02..... Anything to help my odds is just that helping my odds. Why do we wear camo? Why do we use rangefinders? Why do we wear insulated cloths when its cold? Why do we get bigger more comfy stands? We do all this to help our odds of kill a deer and staying in the stand longer. SO brushing my teeth with scent free toothpaste is just another thing. Going to brush my teeth anyways so might as well use something that could help my odds while hunting.
rhine16
I brush with baking soda pretty regular, but not necessarily before hunting. Have been thinking about doing so this year though.
Rhino
Just $.02 more...my attitude is anything I can do to reduce my scent profile, I'll do it. Like toddybowman said...it's all about increasing your odds and my time is precious when I'm hunting especially during the magic days of the rut. There's a limited number of those days each year! Sure...we all try to hunt with the wind in our favor but there are certainly times when the wind shifts, changes, or swirls around some. Also, the lower your scent profile is. the closer a deer has to be on your downwind side to detect you...especially during the hours when your scent is sinking. To each his own but I sure hear a lot of sad stories from hunters that aren't scent free consious. It's common to hear them moan about deer on their downwind side blowing like crazy running deer off on their upwind side....or they didn't see anything but a deer went nuts blowing downwind of them that was too far off to see. That doesn't happen very often at all to me anymore. It seems to be a common problem for them.
Ohiobucks
This guy booked an Illinois whitetail hunt last fall. In preparation, he brushed his teeth with baking soda for a week straight, now look at him! I'll stick with my fluoride toothpaste.

It seems they haven't made that connection with human scent like they have with other factors.
