redkneck
Shot another doe yesterday evening. Stupid peep twisted and I was fighting it with my mouth through a facemask when she busted me. Finally got a little twist, took aim and let one fly. She whirled but I heard a good crack. I'll spare the details, but hours later it involved me, a stupid lab that has lost her sense of smell I guess after generations of being hand fed she apparently no longer needs her nose, and a stupid dachshund jumping on a gut-shot doe 300 yards out in the middle of nowhere. The crack I heard was the back leg being broken. Took an extra hour to go back after I got the doe skinned out to find the wiener dog who also seems to be deaf and dumb. Lessons learned: 1) When you wife sends a text message supper is ready, get down. 2) Leave lab at home 3) Get bell to put on dachsund 4) Get peep with rubber band
Texan_Til_I_Die
That's the 2nd time I've heard of someone using a dachshund to find a downed deer. At least you made the recovery. Congrats!
wtnhunt
Heard of Dachsund's being used, and got to watch one once for a deer a friend shot. Unfortunately that did not end up with a recovered deer despite a pretty long night. Glad you were able to make the recovery John 4) Get peep with rubber band I may go back to this away from the meta peep myself. Rather embarrassing to admit I missed on a coyote at about 7 yards Saturday afternoon, but yeah the stupid peep twisted and I could not see my pins, shot instinctively felt right but did not see the limb I ended up splitting. Yote I think thought a branch fell, never knew I was there or what happened as continued and trotted on.
PotashRLS
Nice list there John. I would be more than happy to ship my wife's beagle down to you. Keep her as long as you like. No need to pay me back even!!

redkneck
The dogs were ABSOLUTELY worthless. The only thing that did likely save me was the fact the lab barked twice at the end when she jumped the deer. I miss my old feist, he was gunshy as could be, but was a great tracker. Too bad about the yote William, I've always wanted to get one with a bow, but so far can't get drawn back when I see one.
wtnhunt
Too bad about the yote William, I've always wanted to get one with a bow, but so far can't get drawn back when I see one. Always wanted to too, and I blew it. lol. All my years hunting that was the first one I have ever had in range with the bow that I have gotten drawn on and 20 some feet up it had no clue I was there. Figure that yote is hunting turkeys on the field edges from just inside the woods, it may slip up again, but doubt I get an opportunity like that again with the bow anytime soon. Just glad it was a yote and not the big 10 we have trail cam pics of.
dbHunterNY
Good to see you got her despite the troubles. now you know to keep the wiener tied up at home. good thing the little guy didn't turn into yote food. lol no worries. layin on the smackdown
Well Johnboy, the important thing is you recovered the deer...so +1 and well done for persevering. As for the dogs, well, sorry bud but that just makes me laugh. I guess you never know when a dog is officially retired until you experience an evening such as yours. In IL, you can use dogs to track, but they have to be on a leash...maybe might want to try that if you or your buddies have another situation such as this. hopefully that will keep the dogs from jumping and bumping the deer. Again, congrats on the doe, and good work on the recovery. dan
ruttinbuc
Glad you got the deer, John. I had that peep get goofy a couple of times. Luckily, I was able to get it where it needed to be without getting busted. Dachshunds are good deer tracking dogs. You need to use a 30 foot leash with them. I had that experience once in the middle of the night. Amazing how fast those little dogs pull you through the woods. We didn't get the deer. Our inexperience called off the track too soon. The dogs owner couldn't go with us. there is a lot of info on this website . redkneck
My dogs are useless. I have hunted with Preston Pittman a time or two, he's got a lab that's a great tracker, my lab is a fat spoiled baby.
