Jeramie
Me personally, I would be looking for a Mossberg 835. They have the best backbore out there. Good solid "never fail" type of guns. I have owned several mossbergs and been very, very happy with all of them. In the price range youre at you can possibly pick up a used Mossberg 935 (Semi-auto) on gun broker. dbHunterNY
remington 870 pump or benelli nova is good. mossberg 500 field/slug barrel combo you can get for that much, but their actions are noisy and they're a bit cheaper. you never know what you can get used though i'd shop around used inventory on gun broker and local gun shops. Shaun_300
I'd be going with a Remington 870, can't go wrong with that choice! I have a nice Wingmaster which is quite a bit more than $400 new, but the Express models are a lot cheaper with the same quality, just not as fancy.
