Ethan Givan
Do you hunt them? If so, what strategy do you use to hunt them? Some people say they are a waste of time, and others say they are the ticket to killing a big buck. Any opinions?
Ravin R10 man
They tell me a buck has been there..helps to know his route and set up somewhere between where he is going and where he has been..I do not sit and watch a rub line..Id rather target the does and catch him scent checking downwind of them
elkoholic
Before the rut gets rolling, hunting a rub line may prove successful, but I believe that most of the rubs were made during the hours of darkness. Thus, to be successful one has to be as close to the bedding area as possible, without disturbing it, in order to catch a glimpse of the buck during shooting hours. It is also imperative that one hunt a rub line leading away from the bedding area in the evening and on leading back to the bedding area in the morning, although on occasion deer will travel the same trail morning and evening. Once the rut gets rolling, just "hunt" the does as rubs will just be random then.
wtnhunt
Nope, I do hunt where rubs happen to pop up though and I have watched deer rub trees while sitting in the stand.
hoosierhunter
If you find a rub line whichever side of the tree the rubs are on is the direction the deer is heading in. I would key in on one big rub if possible because sometimes deer will use one as a scent post and ignore 95% of the other ones.

High Country
Rub lines are sign posts that say "Here I am"...kind of like graffiti on my desks at school. They let me know which areas I should focus on (those with really large rubs near really awful thick cover). When I do hunt "them", I will try to position my treestand on the downwind side of a hot trail coming out of the cover... Every good buck I have seen or harvested in this manner have been following does or coming to break up fights with other bucks (that one ignored my rattling but showed up in less than 30 seconds to the real thing)...
