Wet and Windy NY Opener

it was a tuff opener. didn't see any bigger doe or bucks. slow morning except for the wind. my morning stand was swaying a bit. despite not raining this morning the high winds had the deer holed up and not moving. got out of the stand around 10:15am. went and got breakfast. at a camp down the road from the evening spot on a different farm. basically i was stuck their with some relatives who are hunters and waited out the rain. it finally looked like it let up and was stopping around 2:10am. so i got back in the stand soon after. no deer and then thunderstorms then rolled in around 4:30pm. it wasn't raining and it looked like they were going to miss my area so i stayed out despite the high winds, waiting for it to pass. well it passed but had another cluster of stormy clouds in tow. they ended up right over me. i elected to get down out of the stand, but before i made it out hail started pounding down. the hail then turned into a down pour! made it to my set of wheels and headed home completely soaked with an hour left of light. i've managed to get my bow dry and well, but now drying out the rest of my gear. i tried at least. i just couldn't not go out on opening day.

tomorrow looks to be colder low 50's to 40's and DRY! we'll try again!

I agree. This was the windiest opener I can remember. The deer moved for the first couple hours of light however and Tyler and I saw 22 deer total. Tyler also drew on what he described as a bigger 8 pointer than he shot last year. He didn't shoot as it was facing him. Tyler then, minutes later, drew back 3 times on the same 1 1/2 year old 8 pointer but after his encounter with the big one he didn't want the smaller one. We quit hunting by 11:00 a.m. I'm hoping to see the big guy today! Despite the wind, it was a great day.

I saw no deer on stand both mornings and had to get off my stand Saturday afternoon with branches falling all over.

Yes it was about as windy as I can remember a opening day was.

My son Joe dropped a mature doe this morning.

This afternoon was a bust also. Used the time to pack up early and head home. I have 6 weeks to chase Whitetail after this Friday...I am in no rush.

Good Luck to all.

Sunday brought much more than opening day. Lots of deer close enough just nothing big enough. Light drizzle during the last hours of sunday evening shooting light. Light enough to stay out in it. None of the family got anything, except for one. a younger cousin that i got into the sport last season got a 6 pointer (2-1/2 yr old 8 point hopeful minus brow tines). last year he got a 2-1/2 yr old 8 pointer and with the buck this year i think he's hooked. lol
