markyj987
I normally use my 22 for squirrels, but am going to take my Rem 870 express this weekend for squirrels and rabbits. Does anyone have any choke tube/shot recommendations for me that might work for both kinds of game? I have found 8 million charts on the 'net and they're all different. Any insight on range effectiveness or other game that could be harvested with the recommended combinations would be appreciated. Thanks! I'm a blank slate here---no brand loyalty (well, obviously I'm not buying a new shotgun) or preconceived notions here. I have a Rem XF and Rem Turkey XF tube but am thinking they'd be overkill. birdhunter39
I have used 7.5 shot between rabbits and squirrels with a IC ( improved cylinder) choke
Tominator
I agree with bird. It doesn't take much to kill a rabbit. For squirrel I might step up to #6 shot in case you have to punch through some small branches.
Strut10
Actually, your XF tubes would be great if you were just shooting squirrels. Keep your shots fairly close and haed shoot them. For a squirrel/rabbit combo, I'd screw in a modified tube and some hi-brass #6's..............#5's if there are really tall trees. Some of the oak tops on our property are 25-30 yard shots straight up. A squirrel can be hard to bring out of a tall tree with finer shot.
