WVdeerhunter
Would 50gn 1 777 pellet and 250gn bullet out of my T/C 50 at 0 to 50 yards kill a deer? Im going to take my boy out sat. to try and get his 1st deer. We will only be shooting about 30 yards and i all ready shot the gun at 50 yards and it there with little kick. wtnhunt
Dunno what kind of expansion you would get with just one pellet, might shoot it at a couple milk jugs lined up behind each other at 50 yards and see if it opens up. For a downcharged load for our oldest when she was 8 we used 85 grains of loose pyro here with 240 grain tc xtp mag, worked fairly well. dbHunterNY
i know it's good to use to 30 yards with decent expansion, beyond that i'm not sure. bill winke used that same load for his son and daughter on midwestwhitetail. you could do what william said. 777 comes in 30gr and 50gr pellets. get both and carefully prepack your loads in tubes with 80grs and i'd think you'd be to 50 yards or so. LETMGROW
I may be totally wrong on this but I would be a little nervous about using only 50 gr. of powder charge. Seems like you have gotten away with it up to this point but I would call T/C and ask them about the minimum charge they would recommend. This reminds me a lot of someone I know who undercharged a rifle cartridge. The shot went off, the bullet stopped part way up the barrel and the action blew up. Luckily no physicsl damage to the shooter. Like I said, I could be wrong but I sure wish you would call T/C and ask them. Better safe than sorry. Keep us informed. wtnhunt
Congratulations to your son and to you too. Glad it worked out. Don't see an exit did you recover the bullet, if so what kind of expansion did you get?
WVdeerhunter
Congratulations to your son and to you too. Glad it worked out. Don't see an exit did you recover the bullet, if so what kind of expansion did you get? The way she was standing the bullet went in in front of the shoulder and hit her back bone and did pretty good damage to the in side. I am going to see if the kick is not to bad at 80gr to be sure but it looks like 50 will do at close range. Guy i know we were going to be shooting no more then 30 yards anything past that i dont know if 50gr would do it or not. She didnt go 30 yard and fell over. PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I only shoot 80 to 85 gr of real bp in most all my front loaders. I did once kill a doe at over 80 long steps using only 60 grains of 2f powder and had a complete passthrough. In a modern rifle you would have to literally pound it down the barrel but in a muzzleloader they fit much looser than that so I would seriously doubt that there would be any problem with a bullet not exiting. johnf
I killed a doe about 6 years ago with 83gr and a 240 bullet. The shot was 183 yards ranged. I got great expansion and an exit I could put my hand in. Doe went about 30 yards and dropped. I think 50 gr at 30 yards would be fine. Obviously it worked.
