aujack
I ordered a Tikka T3 Lite in 308win a couple days ago because I have heard nothing but good things about the T3's, and I already own a 270 and wanted to get a different caliber with the new rifle I had been planning to get for a while now. This 308 will become my all-around hunting gun and the 270 will be getting a face-lift for mainly long range shooting. I have never owned a 308 but chose that caliber because several people recommended it to me, and also because of it's ammo availability. I have no idea what ammo is good or bad for this caliber. It will be used mainly for hunting whitetails. I don't want to spend $50 a box, but I also don't want to spend $10 on a box and get poor accuracy and bad results. I have heard that 150gr is the best route to take because the heavier grains like 165gr and up do not expand nearly as well. Where I hunt 95% of the shots I'll be taking will be around 100yds or less, with the exception of a couple spots like powerlines and big fields, which is what I would use my .270 for anyways. So what do you guys think will be the best fitting ammo for my .308? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what you think! Thanks! -aujack
wtnhunt
Have not hunted with my .308 yet, but probably gonna use 168 gr bthp's for hunting with it when I do, they are grouping under .5 inch groups at around 140 yards.
toddyboman
The best thing to do is to try and bunch of different types and see what the rifle likes best. Yeah I know that's going to cost you more but that is truly to best way... Every rifle is different so what shoots good for mine will be different for yours. Good luck! aujack
I have heard that Hornady SSTs shoot groups under 1" at 100yds out of the Tikka. Are they a good choice for hunting? --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=32.554875,-84.871856
Shaun_300
Like Todd said, but a few different brands and see what groups best out of your gun. A lot of guys in my group shoot .308 for deer and most of them shoot the 180gr Remington Core-Lokt.
Strut10
150's.........180's...............they will both expand. Believe me. Winchester Power Points and Remington Core-Lokts are both hammers on whitetail. They are both inexpensive, too. I'd start with a box of each in whatever grain weight makes you happy and see which shoots better. 308's are generally not too picky about which ammo they give good hunting accuracy with. I've shot plenty of deer with 180 gr bullets in a 308win and expansion is no problem with 180 gr Corelokt's. One of the most accurate factory loads I've ever shot in a 308Win is Federal's Vital Shock 165gr Sierra Gameking loads. Federal Premium - Rifle Details These bullets pack a blistering punch to boot. Side note: You may find out that the heavier bullets in the 308 are more accurate than the 270 at longer range. The 270 shoots flatter true but the heavier 165 and 180gr 308 bullets are less susceptible to wind drift.
aujack
I ended up buying a box of hornady superformance sst 150gr just to try them out. We will see how it goes and if I don't like them, then I will change --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=32.241089,-84.548590
LETMGROW
I don't think you will be disappointed with the Hornady ammo. My Icon shoots consistent .5" groups with these. If you have some buddies who have .308's ask them to try a couple three of their choice in bullets for comparison's sake. This could lead up to a fun day at the range also. Let them try yours also. Let us know how you make out, and good luck. Lynn
gobblerroller
I shoot Hornady ammunition and have not found any problems with them. I also like Federal Premium.
hungry hunter
Hope I am not too late, My Savage .308 fple1 loves the 168 gr bthp match, by Black Hills gold, yes its a little more pricy but well worth the money, touch holes at 200 yards almost same hole at 100 yards.
