dbHunterNY
So I was out in a spot hunting for both turkeys and deer with the bow yesterday evening. I was setup on a food source again. Figured that with all the snow coming in everything would be out feeding, turkeys included. well at 4pm the snow started hammering in through the valley, about 2 hours earlier than the weather said. about then i saw a group of five hens feeding up through the field but headed toward the closest edge of the woods, not in my direction. in case one was a boss hen i didn't want to get burned again so i passively called to them. i saw they stopped with heads up. with my voice i hit them with a couple contact yelps. did this a few times and then i saw that they were all running straight at me through the falling snow! i got the bow ready in the ladder stand, just in the woods at the edge of the field. as they came up the field edge by some heavy cover i came to full draw just as the first hen came into an opening in the branches at 16 yards. just as she came into the opening big enough, i felt my tether to my harness fall off my shoulder. well she saw this and pulled a quick 180 and then tried to check out what she must have seen. all the birds at 16 yards sat there with no clear shot. still at full draw a couple marginal openings i passed on. they then entered the woods to get out of the wind. i purred and clucked. started working back my way. before they were back into range they headed down over the ridge out of sight. looks like they got the best of me with a bow again! this encounter and the previous one i could've filled a tag had i brought my Benelli. hopefully i can fill some deer tags and then head out with the Benelli for a special meet and greet for all these birds. won't matter if they don't show me their full body and vitals, i'd settle for jelly heading them just fine. i'm still pretty optimistic. long season with more still ahead. with some luck though i might be able to fill both a deer and turkey tag this afternoon.
