Maine Hntr
Hey guys, I took tomorrow off of work a while back to get out during one of the best times of the year and I'm looking forward to getting out in the woods. We've got a storm coming up the east coast and it's going to bring some 15-20 mph winds with it, do you think with the rut in pretty good swing the deer will be up and moving or do you think it'll be quiet because of the wind? Other than the wind it's supposed to be a decent day, high 40's to 50 degrees and a little bit of overcast in the morning.
WHISKEYSWAMP
I don't think 15-20mph will affect it much... It was windy enough last night that I opted to sit on the ground rather than holding onto a tree. I had about a dozen does and fawns, as well as three bucks out dogging them in a bean stubble field. The wind obviously didn't bother them. Edited November 10, 2011 by WHISKEYSWAMP

hoosierhunter
Well Bill Winke just killed a 180+ last night in a 25mph wind. In fact he says those are his favorite days to hunt.
c_lou
I killed my buck this year in 10-15mph wind. Just hunt the wind correctly and you will see deer moving.
mikewink
I just got my archery buck on Monday. Windy night, didn't stop me or the deer. Any time you can get out this time of year, get er done! I actually prefer a little wind over no wind.
Rhino
Hunt. Ditto...I've had some wild rut action on windy days before.

Tony
one of the weirdest things i saw this year was i wasnt seeing any deer movement from one of my stands during the rut. i was hunting it due to the SSW wind. expecting the deer to come from the South or west. when i started seeing no deer at all, i decided to hunt my north stand. that means the wind was blowing right towards where the deer would come from. it was a great choice, i saw 8 bucks and 4 does that day even though the wind was wrong from what i thought. and yes all the bucks but 1 came from the north with the wind right in there faces. they all walked past me within easy bow range. go figure, guess the rut cancels out the wind. so if you have a few stands and your not seeing much, then try a stand where the wind is marginal, it might be a wise decision. from what i have seen, high winds do not effect the rut or rutting behavior. the bucks are still after does, you just need to hunt thick bedding areas where the does are holed up.
