oklahomakid
Let me start off by saying that I will be the first to admit that I still have much to learn in the world of ballistics. That being said, I don't consider myself completely naive on the topic either. On November 6, 2011 I celebrated my 3rd anniversary of enlistment in the Oklahoma Army National Guard. I got half of my enlistment bonus when I got home from basic training and just got the other half this week. I have decided that it is time for me to upgrade from my old .30-06 to something that can really reach out there and still have tons of knock down power. I live in central Oklahoma and have a deer stand that I leave up year round in a thick tree line that looks out over 120 acres of wheat. This being said, I want my new rifle to be a flat shooting caliber that still packs a good punch at long distances (I also have land I can hunt in North Dakota and have a cousin that lives in Alaska who wants me to go hunting up there sometime! Not to mention all the wild hogs I've got on my place!) Keep in mind, I am wanting to get something other than a .30-06. I don't have any issues with that caliber ... just want something different, something that I can use on deer, wild hogs, elk ... pretty much everything in North America I have done some research on my own and the 7mm rem mag seems like a decent choice, but so does the .300 win mag. I want something that I can easily find ammo for and not have to make a trip to one of the huge chain stores to find it. Any advice on this topic is much appreciated! Happy hunting! Strut10
Here's a vote each for the .300 Weatherby and the .300 RUM. Both will extend your range a bit over the 30-06 and have more punch when it gets there. I believe you can find ammo for both at Wal-Mart. dbHunterNY
yea i would go with a 7mm mag or 300 rum. the power level 300 rum ammo is a little expensive but with the stuff you can shoot different loads tailored more to what you're hunting at the time. DropTine49
7mm REM Mag is an excellent choice. Ammo is very easy to find as well.

Shaun_300
Any of the .300 Magnum calibers would do. Personally I shoot the .300 WSM and love it. Short action rifle with the ballistics of the win mag. If I get another rifle it'll be a 7mm STW if I can find one, always wanted one! It's one of the flattest shooting long distance rifle in existence!:gun2:
doubleA
I think that the 300 Win mag fits the bill nicely. Here's why I feel this way..... In todays world of hyper velocity rounds it's still a solid performer. Factory ammo will be easier to find and cheaper to boot than the wby and rem mags. Rifles in the 300 Win chambering are abundant, just about any manufacture makes one giving you many choices to chose from.
oklahomakid
Thank you all for your input. I went with the Tika T3 in .300 win mag. I have been really pleased with it thus far. I shot a doe Monday morning at about 160 yards. She dropped like a sack of taters! She dressed out at 101 lbs. I can't wait to have those backstraps on the grill! dbHunterNY
300 win mag is a good economical choice. Tikka T3's shoot too from what i've heard. good to see you're liking the new rifle and putting it to use.

redkneck
Believe me, when you go to wally world to ante up for some more ammo, you'll be PLENTY glad you got the Win mag over the Wby. They don't even handle Wby ammo down here anymore, cheapest I can find it is around the $60 range. Last I looked at the Win ammo it was in the sub $30 range at your local Wally-mart.
